How solid are we talking about? I think you'd be fine as long as you can get it most of the way crushed up. I use DME for starters and the little hard balls that develop can be tough to deal with if you dont smash them before they go in the boil. As far as off flavors, I wouldn't let that worry me.

Well, I think instead of spending more cash on a different chiller I'm going to give the plate chiller another chance. But, first I'm going to make some changes to my dip tube arrangement and, the paint strainer bags are going in the bin! Thanks for all the responses, lots of good info.

I would say go with the basement. I live in the south so, no basements but I keep all my grains in an inside closet. Bulk grain in buckets and other stuff in a plastic tote.
