WLP009 Australian Ale Yeast. Anyone tried it?

I'm planning a pale ale with Galaxy and Nelson Sauvin hops and for the whole Aussie experience I was thinking of trying the WLP009 Australian yeast. Has anyone tried it and is it any good? I'm not looking to make a hop or malt bomb with this one. I'd like the result to be nicely balanced between...

    Cleaning your Bag

You don't even need to go mad with rinsing. Just get the big clumps off, leave to dry then shake it outside. When dry all the little grain flakes just fly right off.

    Tap won't dispense beer

Dispense as it is now until finished: "if it ain't broke don't fix it". Afterwards. Test your QD on another keg with just water/sanitiser to see if your QD is bad. If that works fine then test another QD on your iffy keg to see if the post poppet is bad. I suspect the spring poppet in your QD...

    Tap won't dispense beer

You say you have another keg? Try your liquid QD on that keg by pushing some water through. That'll show your QD is good. If that works OK then I suspect your keg post/poppet interface to the QD.

Limiting oxidation: effect of purging headspace O2 in a bottle conditioned IPA

Thanks for taking the time to do this, the images speak for themselves. Tell me, how are you purging the headspace in a bottle? Are you squirting some gas under the cap with some sort of nozzle and then sealing it quickly?

    No carbonation - re-priming

Sorry about that, here's the details. The ABV is 9.1%. The primary fermentation was WY1728 with an appropriate starter and it fermented down quickly with no issues from 1.089 to 1.020. It was left for 3 weeks in primary before batch priming for 2.0 Vols and bottling. A few grains of Notty was...

Toppling Goliath Sues ex-brewer over Non-Compete Violation

I'm surprised these clauses are allowed in the US. They are not allowed in the EU but still very common because HR departments see that you're subject to one and decide you're not worth the effort.

I want a beer but I better not...

I took their good advice and abstained. With 3000mg per day I had dizziness, metallic taste, ear ringing and Delhi belly. Didn't feel like a beer at all. Damn tropical infection. I think the docs looked at the cost of the tests needed to isolate it and just decided to nuke the critter from orbit!

I want a beer but I better not...

Which antibiotic is it? I was on a cocktail of 3 once and the doc held up one of them and said "we always say don't drink alcohol with antibiotics just as a precaution but with this one we really mean it. Don't do it". It was Metronidazole as I recall.

    No carbonation - re-priming

Thread resurrection! @hlmbrwng did your remaining bottles eventually carb up to a decent level? Just wondering because I have a RIS that seems to be taking longer to carb than normal. More than two weeks and I start to get fidgety!

    What's a good satisfying 3.2 to 4% beer?

The best sellers in English pubs are always the golden session ales at around 3.8%. 100% pale malt with just enough East Kent Goldings and brewed to around 3.8% is a very refreshing drink in the summer months.

Someone please tell me what I missed about Force Carbonation

You're not doing anything wrong. What you're tasting is carbonic acid from the dissolved CO2 that you force carbonated with. It fades away over time as you've noticed.

    Hangovers and Homebrew

I've totally noticed this and I'm beginning to wonder what else goes into commercial beer except barley, hops and water. For reasons I don't understand, in the EU brewers are exempt from declaring the full list of ingredients on the bottles so there could be all kinds of preservatives...

First high gravity BIAB - tips?

I brewed it today and was very happy with the outcome. I planned for 70% BH efficiency and actually achieved 77%, so only a 5% drop on what I normally get. Mash efficiency was estimated at 71.5% by Beersmith but I actually got 82% with a pre-boil gravity of 1.070, 5 points higher than the...

First high gravity BIAB - tips?

I see, I had no idea what adjusting the estimated BH efficiency in Beersmith did behind the scenes. What I've done now is bring down my estimated efficiency from 75% (which was already reduced from my usual 80% on lower gravity brews) to 70% and have increased boil time to 90 mins so I've got...

First high gravity BIAB - tips?

Thanks very much for the spreadsheet. I downloaded it and entered the values from my Beersmith recipe then adjusted the conversion efficiency value so that the spreadsheet's mash efficiency matched what Beersmith was predicting. The spreadsheet predicts an SG of 1.083 and Beersmith predicts...

First high gravity BIAB - tips?

It's good to hear that what I'm doing is going to be possible. I normally leave about 2 quarts behind in the kettle and, looking back at my Beersmith records my last mash efficiencies have been 83%, 85%, 90%, 87%. I haven't come across conversion efficiency before and I don't see it in...
