Pilsner neglected in fermenter for MONTHS... Should I even bother?

Fermented out a Czech Pils probably 9 months ago. Pulled the plug on the temp controlled freezer and it's been sitting in there at 55 or 60 degrees ever since. Life took over and I wrote off the batch.:( Is it worth dry hopping, dropping down to lagering temps, and giving it a month to...

    30 min mash Success!

Not to hijack the thread, but....... New to BIAB and used my corona mill for the first time this weekend instead of using the LHBS crush. I bought this one ($24.99 shipped free if you're a "prime" member) http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000U5NZ4I/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20 After a few minutes...

    First BIAB tomorrow..

I've been an extract brewer for 20 years but my nephew and I decided to try BIAB, so tomorrow is the day! I've been doing a ton of reading here, so feel somewhat prepared. I am CONFIDENT we will make beer. :ban::mug: Today we whacked the top off a spare keg, installed a sight glass, and...

    Changing taste in beer

I am curious about everyone else's changing taste in beer over time. I am guessing it's somewhat common, but I also surmise taste has evolved differently for different folks. In college, my palette was not exactly refined, but I drank many different beers and like them all: malt liquors...

What can I make with this mish-mash of misc. ingredients?

From multiple batches that I have modified, borrowed from, or otherwise butchered, I have the following ingredients left over for a quick brew this weekend. I don't have a problem buying some extra ingredients, too. Here is what I have: 4 Lbs. AHBS Extra Light LME 8 oz pale malt, 4 oz...

    Screw Bottle Carbing!

I've posted this here before - my homemade carb caps: Take a clean 2 liter bottle, drill a hole in the cap, and screw in a schrader valve (auto parts stores have them for about a buck) Nice part is, you can fill directly from the tap. The beer will foam, but simply squeeze the bottle...

First IC chiller build - few questions....

THANKS! I plan on making the coil around a corny keg, and using a copper pipe bender for any other bends that are not part of the coil (though I'd like to stop short of anything near a 90 to avoid collapse - hence the "sweeping bend" question!) --Duck911

First IC chiller build - few questions....

Hey all, I am moving to BIAB brewing and decided to go the IC route right now instead of no-chill. First, at home depot today I found a 60' roll of 1/2" id Type L copper tubing marked down to $35 bucks (From $158 ) I have no idea the wall thickness, but can measure. I know type M...

At Whits end - slight apricot flavor in everything I brew

Thanks for the reply! I brew at multiple temps, including pilsners and lagers in a temp-controlled freezer, ales in basement and room temps, etc. So, I doubt that's it... I let my lab lick the spoon I stir the wort with - maybe that's it? :ban:

At Whits end - slight apricot flavor in everything I brew

The title says it all. Every beer I brew has a slight apricot flavor. Ales, pilsners, and lagers. It doesn't matter. I can tell you what is NOT the culprit: Water: I have used tap water, bottled water, etc. No impact. Yeast: I have used ale and pilsner yeasts at all different...

Brew pseudo-pils with ale yeasts, or turn my freezer into a lagering set-up?

Hi all, I am an ale and IPA brewer primarily, but I am big fan of Czech and German pilsners. With basement temps, my ales ferment year 'round between 60 and 70 degrees. In that same basement, I have an unplugged, unused 5.0 CF chest freezer. So my question is, how much of a difference...

Just wanted to say "thanks" for the recipe! I made a few minor deviations but it came out fantastic and has been a holiday hit!

    Little leftover ingredient recipe help?

Update: I ended up with a really good, extremely drinkable beer. I LOVE it when that happens :ban: I more or less followed HopLife's instructions for the boil, with the following exceptions: 1) Didn't dry hop 2) My last hop addition was simply in the wort for as long as it took to...

    Yeast substitute question

I appreciate the feedback... I based my assumption of dead yeast on the following: 1) Smack the Wyeast pack, nothing happens 2) Make starter with dead smack pack... nothing happens Both were delivered during Colorado's record breaking heatwave, and probably sat for a few days in 100+ temps...

    Yeast substitute question

Hi all, I found a clone recipe for Blue Boar Irish Pale Ale, a beer I drank for years. The beer has been discontinued in Colorado but this clone is very close. The AHB recipe calls for WLP004 (Irish Ale yeast), Wyeast 1084 (Irish Ale) or Munton's Gold. I have heard horrible things...
