Brewtarget 1.2.2 - Free Open Source Brewing Software

Cool. Thanks! The plaintext version is already there: Tools->Recipe to clipboard. Then, you can hit "paste" in notepad. We've also got nicely formatted and native printing in the next version thanks to mikfire.

    Are homebrewrs getting hosed?

It has different properties than sucrose that people take advantage of when baking and cooking. For example, sucrose starts to caramelize BEFORE its melting temperature (which is why you have to tend it so closely when making caramel), whereas dextrose caramelizes only after its melting...

Should I use gelatin, transporting kegs!

Use "Super Moss" in the boil. Everything will compact on the bottom of the fermenter when it's done, so you can avoid this issue. With gelatin, no, you don't need to get it cold. Just bloom 1 tsp in cold water for 15 min, bring to 180F (do NOT boil), pour into keg while still hot, wait 1 day.

    Simple PWM Stirplate Controller

Yup. R = resistor, C = capacitor, Q = transistor. Be sure to read my notes immediately following the pictures.

    Beer slow to start fermentation

Your water could be missing nutrients (especially magnesium) that are essential to yeast health. LME and DME contain the nutrients of the water they were originally made with, but doing AG, you only have your own water to count on. Get a water report from your municipality, or get it tested at...

Updated diagrams to be more accurate and less messy; added NPN option.

Justin, Thanks for pointing this out. I'll fix this right away!

How to deal with 8oz of leaf hops in boil?

I actually ended up losing like 0.5 gal to the hops. Whole cones are no joke. They also made a nasty habit of clogging up my autosiphon. I should've thought this through before I decided to brew it without a giant hop bag or a screen.

Good god man...555s are like $0.50 or less at mouser.com. Talk about markup.

Help me identify an unmarked electrical component.

ClaudiusB, you are right. I coaxed the schematic for the centrifuge out of the manufacturer, and the unit is labeled as an interference filter. Now...to the fixin'

Help me identify an unmarked electrical component.

No, but this thing supplies everything in the centrifuge, so I don't expect that it's a motor start capacitor.

    Simple PWM Stirplate Controller

Hey, I wonder...Does the 2n2222 still heat up if you use it as Q1 just like in the schematic with R3 = 10k (or so), and omitting R4?

    Simple PWM Stirplate Controller

Oops, yeah 4 should be tied to Vcc (it works without, but it's safer to be tied due to static/noise). Sucks about the 2n2222. The MOSFET I have is rated for around 600 mA and stays cool as a cucumber.

Help me identify an unmarked electrical component.

Cool, thanks for identifying it. No, the fuse only blows when the motor starts, so it's something either in the motor or the subcircuit attached to the motor, but unless it's the motor itself, I don't know if I can track the problem down because otherwise the bad component is on the...

Help me identify an unmarked electrical component.

I have a malfunctioning centrifuge: it keeps blowing the fuse. Being an EE, I decided I'd take it apart and fix it. Immediately after the fuse, there's a mysterious unmarked electrical device: The 3 leads nearest the camera are for the neutral wire coming in, the hot wire from the fuse...

Brewtarget 1.2.2 - Free Open Source Brewing Software

Gotcha. The problem is that the other recipe is probably using a lower yield for the steeped grain. In 1.2.2, brewtarget doesn't adjust the yield downwards when steeping, but that is about to change with 1.2.3. For now, if you steep a grain, just cut the yield of that grain in half.

    What factors influence sweetness?

Not true. The article says it increases aluminum uptake in the body...meaning that if aluminum is floating around in your blood, maltol causes it to be absorbed.

    What factors influence sweetness?

Probably because it just tasted burnt. The only practical limit is what tastes good.
