    Gelatin Or Not?

Update: I used gelatin in a golden ale and a blueberry stout, and HOLY CLEAR! I racked to secondary, added gelatin, let it sit for a week at room temp. At the end, I could actually see through the glass carboy of golden ale. It didn't do much for the fruit sediment, skins, etc. in the blueberry...

    Gelatin Or Not?

Ok, I know it's not a big deal and I should be RDWHAHBing, but... I have a helles-like ale fermenting in the garage. This is my first from scratch recipe, and I have really big hopes for how great it will come out. I don't enter competitions, but I would really like this to be my flagship...

My QUEST: a RED Red Ale

I recently brewed the Morebeer Old Ale extract kit... It turned out way redder than their Irish Red extract kit. The beer is super-clear and looks like a ruby port, it is just seriously red. So, while I don't know how to make something with the flavour of an Irish red and the color of this old...

    Winter Helles

Will the Munich and Biscuit convert by themselves, or should I add some 2-row to the grain bag?

    Winter Helles

I'm looking for some critique of my first hand-crafted recipe. I want to make a Helles similar to Maui Brewing Company's Bikini Blonde Lager (I like the mouthfeel and slight sweetness), with a little extra body and alcohol to make it through a California winter. And mine will be an ale -- WLP080...

    Bottle to Bottle Variability

Mad Milo: I had been doing that for the first few batches. This weekend, I tried adding the sugar syrup in stages to get better mixing... I'll see how that goes. TipsyDragon: Most of my consumption happens about 4-6 weeks after bottling (that's when I start serving it to friends). I crack the...

    Bottle to Bottle Variability

I've made three batches of beer, and noticed a lot (more than I'd like) of variability from bottle to bottle within a single batch. Things like degree of carbonation, head retention and amount, and "stickiness" of sediment. The flavour is always very consistent, but it seems like the attributes...

Where can I buy dimple pint glasses?

    Sweet! Thanks for the link.

Where can I buy dimple pint glasses?

Does anyone know where I can buy somewhat reasonably priced "dimple" pint glasses? These are the old beer mugs that used to hold an Imperial pint. The ones that my dad, and probably your dad, or maybe you yourself, used to drink from until the 90's. They look like this. I've been searching...

Why does my hydrometer hate me?

I'm using the formula (OG - FG)*131 = ABV. JLem: that sounds very plausible. I am doing a partial boil, and generally wind up with 2.5 gallons of boiled wort that gets topped up to 5. I'll try mixing more before taking the sample when I do my next batch.

Why does my hydrometer hate me?

Thanks for these suggestions! I am correcting for temp using the sheet that came with the hydrometer, but since I'm always above 60F, the correction will always increase my gravity reading (which I suspect is too high anyway). I've also tried it in tap water, and get eyeball-close to 1.000...

Why does my hydrometer hate me?

This sounds too ridiculous to be true, but I think I am using my hydrometer incorrectly. My first batch of beer measured out to about 3.5% ABV. I know that tasting alcohol is difficult and subjective, but pretty much everyone that tried it felt like it was more in the 4-5% range. I think the...

    Quiet Alternatives to an Airlock?

I'm using a plastic bucket with S-shaped airlock, and the gurgling is starting to drive me crazy! My house is small enough that you can hear it in every room, and it's been going non-stop for the last three days. Has anyone used a check valve or something else to keep air from coming in but...

Fermentation can take 24 to 72 hrs to show visible signs.

This happened to me three weeks ago, also with a british pale ale. I used a dry Windsor yeast at kind of a warm temperature, and all fermentation took place within the first day or two. My OG was 1.050, and final was 1.018 (4% ABV). I measured my final gravity 10 days after starting, and again...

Fermentation can take 24 to 72 hrs to show visible signs.

I just brewed my second batch of beer, and of course totally freaked out at the slow start. My first batch had started bubbling the airlock after 2 hours, and had huge krausen and constant bubbling a couple of hours later. By the end of day 2, it was all done. The outgas smelled like fruit...

    Modifying a recipe with fruit

I want to make a blueberry stout (as my second batch of beer), and Morebeer has a really good price on an all-extract Milk Stout. Could it be as simple as using that kit and adding some (4 lbs) of blueberries to the boil?

    Best Bottles for de-labeling

I'm new to homebrewing (in the middle of my first batch), and I wanted to share my experience cleaning and de-labeling beer bottles. I learned that some beers give up their labels easily, but others don't. Here's my list: First off, my procedure for de-labeling was to put half a scoop of...
