    iBrewmaster2

Would you mind giving your thoughts on some of the independent calculators that are now included. To be honest, unless these are really good I can't see it being worth upgrading. iBM1 does that I need it to. Specifically: -How is the refractometer calculator? Does it allow for both OG and...

    iBrewmaster2

I have iBM and really like it. There are some promising new features in iBM2 that intrigue me, but I'm not ready to buy it for $18 only to find they don't live up to what I'd hoped, since there is no way to really test it out without diving in head first and just buying it. I'm happy with iBM...

    CAP - Cereal/Main Mash Schedule

While flaked maize or instant grits would certainly be easier, I'll draw a quote from Jeff Renner's excellent article on reviving the CAP style from Zymurgy in 2000, on why I am choosing to do a cereal mash. (Link: http://www.homebrewersassociation.org/attachments/0000/1298/SOzym00-Pilsner.pdf)...

    CAP - Cereal/Main Mash Schedule

Hi All, After much reading on the style over the last week, I've decided to make a Classic American Pilsner using 6-Row and Corn Grits, utilizing a cereal mash. However, I'm still trying to decide how to incorporate this into my mashing program. If my understanding of cereal mashing is...

    Y'all have let me down!

I believe (and could be wrong on this) that Winter White and their lagers are the only beers that don't use the house strain. I had heard the same thing about using a low ABV beer to get the yeast, and successfully cultured from Pale Ale last year. After talking to one of the Bell's brewers...

    Y'all have let me down!

Am I the only one who used Oberon Day as an opportunity to culture some of their house yeast? Threw the dregs from a 17 day old six pack into a 750ml starter, then stepped up to 2L, now I have enough (based on the thick slurry I have) to pitch into my next 5 gallon batch. I brewed three beers...

Imperial Red Ale / India Red Ale Malt Bill

It's funny you mention it because I literally just got done listening to the Oskar Blues CYBI podcast (while drinking a Red Rocket ironically). Their beer uses two shades of crystal at about 14% of the grist and has a lower rate of hopping than I'm planning. I guess more than anything it gives...

Imperial Red Ale / India Red Ale Malt Bill

Not really. From my past use of Victory and Chocolate Malt, I think that might impart a different flavor than the style guidelines I included above suggest, especially if the beer dries out to 1.015 or so like you've suggested. Sounds like a great beer, just a different one than what my target...

Imperial Red Ale / India Red Ale Malt Bill

If there was a list of commercial beers I'm trying to go along the lines of, this would be a good list to start. (http://aleheads.com/2011/01/18/best-imperial-red-ales/) Another good one is Bell's This One Goes to 11 (Link: http://www.bellsbeer.com/brands/45-This%20One%20Goes%20to%2011%20Ale)...

Imperial Red Ale / India Red Ale Malt Bill

I'm looking for a bit of recipe feedback from anyone who has put together an Imperial Red Ale or IRA that they really liked. The beer I'm making is based on GABF Style Category 55 (Imperial Red Ale). For easy reference: 55. Imperial Red Ale Imperial or Double Red Ales have intense hop...

    Bells Oberon Clone

The house strain is used in Pale Ale, Amber Ale, Two Hearted, Oarsman, Third Coast, Best Brown, Porter, Oberon and probably some others I missed. This was confirmed to me directly by one of the brewers. I've used Pale Ale for a culture before and it worked very well.

    Motorized Barley Crusher

This one: http://www.harborfreight.com/1-2-half-inch-heavy-duty-spade-handle-drill-93632.html I got one and have only used it twice, but it really seems to work well, especially in keeping the rpm's down.

2014 AHA National Conference coming to Grand Rapids

I do not belong to a homebrew club... yet, though I have plans to join one soon. I've only been brewing for a year now, so joining a club has only recently become something I've gotten interested in. However, I have little doubt clubs will be well represented at this NHC. I believe Primetime...

2014 AHA National Conference coming to Grand Rapids

I had heard rumors of this in the last few months, since it was on the DeVos Place (in downtown GR) website, but this confirms what was suspected, the AHA National Conference is coming to Grand Rapids in 2014. Very exciting news, especially considering the growth in the craft beer industry in...

    founders bolt cutter

It was bottled/kegged in July, so it does have some age on it. Not enough though for most any barleywine, and most certainly not one that is 15% ABV. A year from now though I expect to be wow'ed. Plus, I have a feeling they are holding a few kegs back for some more aging. I live about 10...

    founders bolt cutter

I'll be very curious to see how this mellows out with some age on it. I have no intention of cracking mine open until probably Christmastime 2013. I'd hope that would be long enough.

    founders bolt cutter

Where in God's name did you find a place that allowed you to buy a case? Most places have limits on something like this, though a local supermarket I just got mine at didn't. I hope you plan on sharing. :mug:

    Motorized Barley Crusher

Maybe I missed it, but what model is that drill? It looks like the low speed Harbor Freight drill sans handles. If so, how is it working out for you? I'm expecting a Barley Crusher for Christmas, and based on lots of research I that drill seems to be the best available option.

    Bells Brewing Homebrew Expo 2011

Thanks for the congrats Adam. It's pretty humbling to come out on top in a field that I know included a lot of very good brewers. It's still sinking in but I'm pretty excited for the brew day to come. I don't know specifics yet but sounds like it will get brewed late this year and put on tap...
