First AG with terrible mash efficiency

Oh yeah, strike 4.5 gal, sparge 4.5 gal, pre-boil volume 6.5 gal, post-boil 5.5 gal

First AG with terrible mash efficiency

I brewed a potentially big beer a couple days ago with estimated pre-boil gravity at about 1.080 from 14.77 lbs grain. After draining the pre-boil gravity was a dismal 1.040 at about 140 degrees. With temperature correction I think that gets me to about 1.055. I've read several posts since about...

    Ideal Wort Chilling Time

Most recommend getting the temperature down below roughly 160F as quickly as possible. This can happen pretty quick with an ice bath if you've got a big tub. After you get it to the lower temperature range there is less concern about off flavors from slower cooling. If you're doing a smaller...

    Did I underpitch my starter?

I definitely don't mind waiting a little longer. Is it too late to aerate?

    Did I underpitch my starter?

Oh yeah, the yeast was fresh too.

    Did I underpitch my starter?

Oxygen might be the issue. I'm confident the gravities are right and I used partial grain with LME to fill it out. I didn't add oxygen, just aerated the wort while adding to the fermenter. Is it too late to get this right now or would I be risking contamination too much by going back I'm with...

    Did I underpitch my starter?

I am at day 7 for a Belgian ale. Fermentation was going well for first couple days with mega Kraussen and then tapered off drastically. I took a reading of 1.028 (down from OG of 1.074). When I made the starter I used a stir plate and ran it overnight with 1 liter wort at 1.040 and two vials of...

    Efficiency?

Excellent. Thanks for the help. I didn't take any gravity readings after mashing so I'll be sure to do that next time.

    Efficiency?

It helps explain the what. How do you calculate? Is it based on the gravity of the mash after sparging?

    Efficiency?

I've been seeing information about "efficiency" with grain brewing but nothing to explain what it is, purpose, how to determine. I've got a brew app that lists efficiency but that won't help unless I know how to use the info. Can someone help explain?
