    first all grain

Pale Ale is a good start. My first AG was a Robust Porter. Simple grain bill is a good way to start until you get a feel for what you are doing.

    Leave the Gas On?

Yeah, leave it on. AZ IPA is right, depending on the temp you have it sitting at, it should take a week or two to be right.

    Noobie's first brew..

Star San works great. I haven't had any issues with it.

    My Island is Crazy

I thought of the same tent idea. I was thinking circus tent, or one of those event tents used at weddings. They go up pretty fast, and he could even throw a "party" each year around the same time the tent goes up to mask his intentions. It may not fit the actual code, and this guy probably can't...

    My Island is Crazy

Check out this article form our local paper: City codes threaten winery - Bainbridge Island Review There are several of these garage type wineries on the island. The wines they produce are actually great. Its so frustrating that someone would complain about the outdoor part of this guy's...

What are you asking Santa for?

I thought I'd make it easy on my family this year and just grabbed a William's Brewing Catalog and circled the things I want. A couple Blichmann burners, a pump, plate chiller, and some sst quick disconnect fittings. I'll probably end up getting a gift certificate, or an extract kit like the...

After racking to secondary, no action from airlock. is this normal?

Sounds normal, most if not all of the actual fermentation should take place in the primary. Most of my secondary conditioning shows no signs in the airlock unless I've dryhopped.

    Krausen in my air lock

You might think about switching it to a blow off hose.

Holy Crap, I just got ENGAGED.

Congrats! I fumbled my way through our proposal on a barnacle encrustd beach. She still swears I didn't get on on knee, but I think her eyes were just too filled with tears of JOY to notice. Also, nice work asking the father. Good luck! I've been married 4 months now, and am actually having a...

    grains in the primary

I'd agree with gr8shandini, higher mash, more grains, different specialty grains, you could even try a no sparge mash and just collect the first runnings.

Help me make the reddest beer that was ever red

Actually, raspberries might work. Although then you'd have a fruit flavored beer. I made a blackberry wheat this summer using 9 lbs of fresh berries and it came out absolutely purple.

Help me make the reddest beer that was ever red

I'd say make up a nice hoppy IPA recipe. Use those lighter malts, and then that safflower herb to color it red. That'd keep the red as vibrant as it could be. Too many specialty grains might add a deeper red. I've tried to do a red IIPA before and it didn't turn out red. You might be able to get...

    The [Horribly Unpopular] Soccer Thread

I agree that the single game ramps up the intensity that the double final approach leaves out. As for the neutral city aspect, I wonder if they've thought about having non-member cities host the final. Meaning cities that don't currently have an MLS team. Sort of like you were saying ThickHead...

    2009 Dechutes Jubelale

I'll let you all know how the second batch turns out. Its in primary right now bubbling away. I'll dry hop this weekend hopefully. I've never used Ringwood. Couldn't hurt to give it a try. If it tastes great then thats all that really matters. I can never seem to remember from year to year how...

Yeah welcome! The psych degree will do wonders here!

    Cheap fly sparge arm?

It could work, I think you're have to get a graden hose to hose barb fitting for it. You could also just take some clear transfer hose like you probably have laying around for syphons and racking, get a hose barb T, make a loop with the hose, cut slits in the loop, and just use that. might be...

    No Barley, no hops

Maybe look into a spruce type beer.

    grains in the primary

I'd have to agree with gr8shandini. Lautering has been around for a long long time. If you are trying to figure out how to seperate your mash from your extract in a semi-old fashioned way before they had copper manifolds and Igloo coolers you could just use a Brew In A Bag method. We've been...

    The [Horribly Unpopular] Soccer Thread

I went to the 2009 final here at Qwest between LA and RSL. It was a little strange to be watching two teams from the MLS play each other while the majority of the fans are wearing the local team's colors. It seemed like fans were cheering for, and talking trash to both sides equally. It became...
