How Do You Hop A 60 Minute IPA?

Ive heaard of people adding all the hops in 5-7 min increments. So what I would do is convert the onces to grams and then divide the total by 12 or 8 to figure out how many grams per addition.

Has anyone seen this?! (yeast starter saga)

I will admit when I first started brewing that I overkilled my sanitation practices. This guy needs help! I don't know what to even say. Im dumbfounded.

    Beer smith

I look at bjcp guidelines. I then look at a couple of different recipes for a style of beer that i want to brew and see what is in common. I do all my calcs for o.g. target, ibu target, and lbs of grain needed. Usually the steps of brewing is similar from on recipe to the next. Brew it up...

    Stuck Drain in Mash Tun

That is why I went with a copper manifold. Braids tend to get clogged easier. I also go a step further in trying to prevent stuck sparges. I wrap my manifold with cheese cloth. I've never had a stuck sparge... I better knock on wood.

    over carbonated

Every time I've had gushers it was because I improperly sanatized something. Chances are if they are gushers then time really wont help a whole lot. This batch may be one of those live and learn batches.

Does anyone love or despise Anchor Steam?

One of my favorites! I brew a steam beer all the time. SWMBO loves this beer when I brew it. It is my house beer.

    last brew for awhile

I just wont have the time. It is also easier to justify $9 six packs than $40 worth of ingredients. SWMBO doesn't really see how I save money by brewing but that is my fault. I keep buying books, carboys, and other brewing equipment when I buy ingredients. Im kind of like a kid in a candy shop:)

    last brew for awhile

Once I do get in the house the first thing I am planning to do is a keezer build. Also, the appliances are staying. They are uber old so we will probably get new appliances. The old refridgerator will be put in the basement and I will use it as a fermenting chamber. I will be able to make...

    last brew for awhile

I just bottled my last beer yesterday. I wont be able to brew for awhile now...sad. just bought a house so any extra time and money will be going to renovations. Hopefully the raspberry steam beer lasts all summer... who am I kidding. It wont last a week.

    Significantly lower OG?

Please tell me the "msu" in msuadamc stands for Michigan State University. I graduated from there in 2001.

does lower eff. effect anything other than your wallet?

The first couple of brews I did I had 60% efficiency. I read blogs on how to improve efficiency and the next thing I now my brews O.G. readings were way to high. My efficiency was hovering around 85% for my last several batches. It really doesn't take to much to improve your efficiency.

Priming (Corn) Sugar vs. DME for Hefeweizen?

All I use is corn sugar. I've never had a problem or off flavors. It takes less amount of corn sugar to carbonate a bottle of beer than DME. I use this calculator ( http://www.tastybrew.com/calculators/priming.html )to figure out how much I need. If you don't have a scale I would suggest you...

    Adjusting Recipe / Boil Volume

Well, i'm interested in my final ibu's. Let's say my final ibu is 40. I hand calculate what each addition of hops will give me. If I want my beer to be bitter I will add most of my ibu's in the 60 minute boil and make up the rest in flavor and aroma. A great book to read is designing great...

    Secondary Fermentation?

I always rack to a secondary and never had an issue. The reason I transfer is because after the primary fermentation is done I want the beer to clarify a little more. So when you bottle the beer there wont be as much sediment on the bottom of the beer bottle. I also want to get it off the...

1st post, 1st brew, 1st krausen on ceiling?

Absolutely. As long as the tube fits nice and tight inside the carboy neck it should be fine. Usually with the higher O.G. beers you will need a blow off rather than an airlock.

Did I just cook my yeast?

If the starter was 80 degrees your original yeast should've been fine. In all the times I've made a starter yeast I have never had Krausen form on top. If by shaking the starter you are releasing co2 then the yeast has started fermenting the wort. Another thing to keep in mind... lager yeast...

    Why do 10 gallon batches?

If doing an all grain batch, some people will take the first runnings and that will be one batch and then they will collect the second runnings in another boil pot and that will be the second batch. Obviously the second runnings will have a lower O.G. but the cool thing about this that you will...
