Got no head retention or hop quality in my IPA. Why?

Do you know what type of water you are using? Using hard or soft water will effect the hoppiness in the beer. I forget if hard water produces a hoppier beer but google it, that may be part of the issue. If your OG is to low then I would think your efficiency is off. It took me three brews to...

What was your original gravity and final gravity?

Have you used citra hops as bittering hops? I have...

I made a citra ipa about month or so ago. I believe I used 4 oz of citra hops which includes 1 oz for dry hopping. I didn't use it for bittering because I felt it was defeating the purpose of that particular hop. Most people want the flavor and aroma of citra. Using citra at 60 minutes boils...

Infection help. 2nd batch. Same infection. What now?

I would soak your equipment in PBW. This will clean your equipment with little to know scrubbing. This is different than soaking in starsan. Starsan just sterilizes equipment, it does not clean them. Honestly that is where 99% of infections come from.

How to make IPA stronger and more hoppy

There are a few things you can do to up the abv. I haven't done an extract kit in years but I believe they are designed for 5 gallon batches. That being said you could use less water to up the abv but who wants to sacrifice quantity for higher abv? If I were you I would add more LME or DME to...

Keg pressure keeps rising, what's going on?

do i need to decant a 2L yeast starter?

Throw the starter in. I do it both ways. I normally decant but if I'm in a time crunch I pitch everything. Never had a bad batch because of spent starter in my beer. IMO, the only time that you should decant is when you are making a lager. Lagers are suppose to be very clean.

    Starter blew off, yeast lost?

the point of the foil is to not make it air tight. Normally foil allows the co2 out while allowing oxygen in. The airlock prevents o2 from getting in. I'm surprised the foil allowed a pressure build up. I just made a starter of wlp 001 for a citra IPA in a 2 liter flask with a stirplate. I...

    Starter blew off, yeast lost?

I would make another starter just because your final volume is so low. What yeast are you using? Are you using an airlock or aluminum foil to cover the mouth of your flask?

    4L yeast starter

I'm sorry, I miss spoke. I was recalling the chapter in yeast starters when it pointed out that if a vial doubles in a 1 liter starter and you decide to pitch that quantity into another 1 liter starter that it will not double in size again. Sorry about that.

    4L yeast starter

I'm just saying what I read you could be right but the way I understood chris white that wasn't the case

    4L yeast starter

Yes, that is what I'm saying. I know it sounds weird that 3+3 does not equal 6. I read the yeast book by chris white and he goes into explaining why but seriously that is way over my head. I'm an engineer not a biochemist.

    Mash tun fittings containing lead??

I used brass fittings and I've been brewing for over 10 years. The little head twitch I developed is minor to all the great beer I've brewed... just kidding... no head twitch, just an eye twitch ;)

    4L yeast starter

If I'm understanding you correctly you will make your first starter cool and decant and pitch into a second starter to get a total of 6 liters of starter. The problem with this is that the yeast won't multiply like it did in the first starter. It will actually produce way less yeast than the...

CPVC Manifold - Where did I go wrong?

I built my manifold with copper and drilled holes. I still worried about stuck sparges because let's face it, a pvc manifold or a copper manifold everyone faces the possibility of a stuck sparge everytime you brew. So, what I do is before I dump my water into the mashtun I wrap my manifold...

    Stepping DOWN a yeast starter

I think your steps of what you want are spot on. I was in the school of crash cooling then decanting. I read the yeast book and it said that if your starter is less than 10% of your total volume then pitching the entire starter volume will not effect flavor. So normally I make a 1.5 liter...
