    Boiling in the sight glass

I picked up a used 15 gallon keggle with threaded valve, thermometer and sight glass... Can the sight glass be useful during the boil? Mine is bubbling before the keg comes to a boil, and when I actually put extract in the keg, I'm concerned about it boiling over and making a mess. It expelled...

How important is it to control the temperature of a yeast starter?

@CodeSection Thanks...so letting the starter wort sit on top off it for a couple of weeks in the fridge is nothing to worry about? Just did initial burn on my outdoor burner (pick up a Hellfire) and boil leak teat on on a used keggle...hoping to actually get to make my high gravity blood...

How important is it to control the temperature of a yeast starter?

I did a 3L starter last week, but did not get to use it over the weekend. I'm going to brew this Saturday. My starter has been sitting in the refrigerator ever since. Should I let it return to room temperature before or after I decant the starter wort?

    Coriander and Oranges

Is there a difference between brewing coriander and coriander bought in the bulk aisle from the grocery store? Also, when prepping oranges for addition to a carboy, after zesting the orange, would it be better to run the oranges through my juicer before steeping? Or do I need to use the skin...

How important is it to control the temperature of a yeast starter?

I went ahead and dumped it and started over. If this one smells the same, I'll know the last one was good. And this time, I'm doing a single step with 3L instead of a 2 step starting with 2L to make it easier. And...turns out the burnt DME was on the outside of the flask...no matter how hard I...

How important is it to control the temperature of a yeast starter?

What should the starter smell like? My wife says it sells slightly sour, but not bad. Also, I’v got a little bit of burnt DME at the bottom of my flask...had the fire too high. I’d say 15% of the flask bottom is covered. Curious if I should start over given these two points.

How important is it to control the temperature of a yeast starter?

Ive ended up with a 5L flask. I see people using foam stoppers. Is this necessary? Or can I cover with foil? Do I need to poke holes in it so fresh air (oxygen) can get in while it is on the stir plate for a day or two? What about using an airlock?

How important is it to control the temperature of a yeast starter?

In some videos I watched, op would start with 1 quart of water and DME, then the next day add another quart of water and DME, then another, then another. Is thee any reason not to start with 2 liters of water amount of water and DMW if the calculator says two liters will get the job done?

    Quick Disconnect for Stainless tubing

@augiedoggy yes, thank you for finding my word for me. There would be no beer contact, just water...but I’ll just have to order online since I cannot find stainless fittings locally.

    Quick Disconnect for Stainless tubing

I don’t want the tubing connected to the stainless coil while the wort is boiling. I’m moving from my stove to an outside burner on my next boil. I’d prefer to connect the tubing when the boil is done. Plus, it would help with storage. I’m using the outside faucet and the waste water dumps into...

    Quick Disconnect for Stainless tubing

I wouldn’t leave tubing connected while it’s in the boiling wort… Hence why I’d like to quick disconnects. When using compression fittings do I need to worry about any sort electrolysis (correct wording?) if I am having stainless and brass mesh together?

    Quick Disconnect for Stainless tubing

I currently use a garden hose to supply from the outside bib faucet and have it exit into the pool. This way I’m not wasting water for 20 minutes of circulation since the pool needs to be topped off anyways.

    Quick Disconnect for Stainless tubing

I have a barbed hose connector I attach to vinyl tubing. I want to get away from the vinyl tubing for when it is in the boiling wort for sanitizing.

    Quick Disconnect for Stainless tubing

Good morning. I have a stainless work chiller coil. I'd like to put QDs on it in order to remove the tubing when not in use. Can someone share with me how to add QDs to stainless tubing? The the QDs they recommend?

How important is it to control the temperature of a yeast starter?

To paraphrase the thread, If I want to brew on Monday: On Saturday morning, boil some DME in 2 liters of water (calculated in the online calculator) and cool it to room temp. My kitchen sits around 69 degrees Pull my smack pack out of the fridge Smack it Put it in the cooled extract water Put...

Yeast starter with an immersion circulator

I have a stir plate, but it doesn't regulate temperature. I was thinking of the immersion circulator because it would provide temperature control while agitating the yeast. However, now that I'm thinking it trough, it does not create an air vortex, so I don't think it would provide oxygen. I...

Yeast starter with an immersion circulator

Beating up the east is a bit of my concern. But I’m not sure how much more it would beat up the yeast versus using the spin bar with a star plate…

Yeast starter with an immersion circulator

I am doing my first yeast starter this weekend. I need to increase my start count to compensate for a 1.08 OG. Would it be detrimental to the yeast if I maintained my temperature and aeration with an immersion circulator?

Ferment in Cold Garage or Warm House?

@Dave Sarber Heard. @kh54s10 Agreed. @kevin58 Thank you. I will look for the video @bleme That's cool...I could use my immersion circulator to maintain a specific minimum temps...I wonder how quickly it would wear out? But, I'll likely start with the heating pad.
