When you can’t decide what hops to get, get ‘em all!

Ok maybe I put a few too many hops in my cart at YVH, and maybe I had a few too many when I did it, but I figure next years hops won’t be out for quite a while, so what’s the difference if they sit in my fridge or theirs.

What lager yeast in Sierra Nevada Lagers?

WLP838 probably won’t get you there. It doesn’t attenuate high enough to match what you are going for. I have been using that all winter and It leaves a bit of residual sweetness regardless of mash. I will hopefully be trying a beer with WLP940 tomorrow as long as my LBS has it in stock.

    Bucket v.s. conical v.s. unitank

How many brews do you have fermenting at a time? I currently have (4) 7 gallon ss brew buckets going right now. That would be $2200 in conicals. Lol. I have no experience in conicals but I look at all the pieces and I think a nightmare to clean. I don’t even like cleaning the one port on my...

Starsan works great for removing burnt malt stains

Nice! I had a hell of a time getting it off last time. Will try this next time.

    Incomplete Fermentation past 16days

Beware of bottle bombs if it’s still going by then or decides to wake up.

    Incomplete Fermentation past 16days

That seems like very low attenuation for us05. How long was it stuck there? Warm it a little, give it a little shake and wait.

    That German Lager taste

What does this mean? What water on the cold side? I know some breweries do stronger mashes and makeup water. Maybe that.

No chill - throwing flameout hops in cube

There is definitely a risk which is probably why they generally use cubes. A bug or something else could get in there I guess. So maybe not the recommended approach but I have gotten lucky so far.

No chill - throwing flameout hops in cube

I’ve done several no chill like brews. All IPAs. I didn’t use a cube, just left it in the kettle overnight, sometimes with a fan blowing on it. I scaled back the bitter hops to 30 minutes and the late hops later. Also I held back some water and added it at the end to make up volume to cool...

Any recommendations for "Brew in a Bag" stainless replacement?

Dunk sparge is as easy and efficient as it gets. But curious, what’s the grain amount difference for skipping the sparge?

Any recommendations for "Brew in a Bag" stainless replacement?

I found a stainless basket on Amazon once and tried it, similar to the ones linked above. It was kind of a pain to clean and you can’t squeeze it of course and it was a little harder to maneuver and get set just right in the kettle. It was a little easier to do a pour over sparge though. I...

    Slurry lag versus fresh pitch

Maybe notty is better suited for this. But I guess that is the problem - too many variables. The yeast strain, length of storage, previous brew strength, etc. if you are a brewery doing the same brew on the same schedule with the same yeast, you can find a repeatable solution. But...

    Slurry lag versus fresh pitch

So I just did this with a lager yeast wlp838, and 1.5 days later barely a sign of anything happening. 1.050 starting gravity. Tiny bubbles on the surface but nothing registering on the Tilt yet. I think I will stick with overbuilding starters and saving half. Maybe if it happens to work out...

    Slurry lag versus fresh pitch

So is there a “good” way to repitch? I should go back to just overbuilding starters and saving half, but sometimes I am stuck with a repitch. So normally I do fermentation for 2-3 weeks, cold crash, then transfer and collect the slurry, add to large mason jar with some beer on top and put...

What do you use to weigh down dry hop/fruit bags?

These work well too. Borrowed them from eh someone. Just clean them well. (: https://www.pinkcherry.com/collections/kegel-tools-ben-wa/products/ouch-med-stainless-steel-silver-ben-wa

What do you use to weigh down dry hop/fruit bags?

I think I would stick with food grade stainless like spoons or glass over industrial metal nuts. Watcha making that requires cucumber?

    Harvesting & Repitching Yeast

This was my experience last month. I repitched a slurry that was only a couple of weeks old and reasonably clean. I figured there had to be a ton of cells in there given the volume. I normally would have built a starter but it was pretty fresh. It ended up taking 3 days for any significant...

i will try next time. Will it graph them with separate lines?

How to use (2) Tilt Hydrometers?

Here is my ferm chest freezer with a very old iPad mini connected to 2 Tilts sitting on top. I love being able to have a live dashboard. The only thing I haven’t figured out is how to log both Tilts to the same spreadsheet. Anyone know how? This picture shows a great use case for the tilts...

Corny kegs - ball lock or pin lock?

On the new ball lock kegs I have bought, the poppets don’t seem to come out like on the old ones. It makes the post easier to screw on but a little worried about cleaning. Is there a way to get them out? I don’t want to force them and break it.
