Thanks, should be fun. Might be my last extract brew, but not sure yet. Really want to move right to all-grain.

    Yes, another Pliny clone question

I am giving the Pliny clone extract kit from MoreBeer a try this weekend. It says to immediately steep the grain and first hops and remove at 170. Whats the difference between that and bringing the temp up, flaming out, and steeping for 20 minutes or so? Just wondering...

    Boil volume

Yeah I'm doing full boils. Thanks for the tips guys, that's what I was thinking as well. I don't know how much research I will do though with this kettle because I plan to go to all grain very soon, and will be going to another set up.

    Boil volume

Hey guys, last weekend I did my first brew day. I did a 5 gallon batch from a brewers best kit that was an IPA. Everything went well, but I think I boiled off more than a gallon in my 6 gallon boil. It looks like I have about 4.5 sitting in my carboy. It was an hour long boil. I have read that...

    First batch

I was pouring through a strainer, but it kept clogging up. I'm thinking of whirl pooling the next batch and siphoning to the fermenter. This batch had 4 separate hop additions so there was a lot of hop matter in there. I wonder if I should have used hop bags instead. Also, from the look of my...

    First batch

Hey guys, had my first brew day today and was a blast! Quick question though. When I transferred to the fermenter, I tried to get as much of the trub out as I could but it was a real pain. Also, just poured the yeast into the carboy and put the airlock on, no stirring or anything. This is what...

    Wort chiller clean enough?

Thanks for the tip, glad you said something. I'll do that then :D

    Wort chiller clean enough?

That's what I was thinking as well. It looked worse than the picture when I first got it, so I wanted to make sure to get it clean. I'll soak it in my Star San solution on brew day until I use it :)

    So who's brewing this weekend?

An IPA kit from my LBS. Can't wait to get my feet wet in this hobby! Well, cleanliness is one of my main concerns. Beer will be involved for sure!

    Wort chiller clean enough?

Hey guys, a buddy of mine gave me a Wort chiller to use. So I figured I would try to clean it up good before I use it. I have boiled it in a vinegar/water solution twice, and scrubbed it with a sponge and B-brite. Each time when the I dry it off with a paper towel, there is a little residue on...

Blow-off tube vs. appropriately sized fermenter

What's the best way to secure the blow off tube? Do you just stick it in a certain distance?
  19. YukonLT

    Fermentation question

I was told that the blow off tube should be no deeper than an inch in the water. Truth?
  20. YukonLT

    Fermentation question

Another quick question along the fermentation line. I will be using a 6.5 gallon carboy for primary. It will be a five gallon batch. Is that enough headspace to just use an air lock, or do I need to run a tube into a bucket? Is it dependent on the beer style?
