    Quick sparge question

Thanks guys, I figured I would be ok. I built a new 10 gallon cooler mash tun that I will be mashing in :mug:

    Quick sparge question

Any reason you can't drain off your first runnings into a sanitized brew bucket, instead of your brew kettle? Say your only source for heating up water is your kettle, and you need it to heat up your batch sparge water while you are mashing in. You store the first runnings in the bucket, then...

Glad I used a blow off!

I pitched one package of US-04 and it's sitting at about 66-67 degrees. I can just sit and watch it push through the blow off tube.

Glad I used a blow off!

Brewed a Russian Imperial Stout yesterday, OG was 1.075, so I made sure to use a blow off tube because I figured it was going to be active. Plus, I was putting this one in a closet in my gear room, so I wasn't taking any chances. Glad I did, because after 24 hours she is rocking!

Wow, a year of bad batches, that would be painful! I want to make the move, but I'm not in a huge rush. Still thinking a few things out on it.

    Grain steeping times

Yeah I was a little thrown off on steeping the Cascade hops with the grains, as I have never read about that before. Thanks for all the responses! VERY appreciated :mug:

    Grain steeping times

Hey guys, my Pliney extract kit says to immediately soak the grain/hops and remove it when the water hits 170. I always thought you brought the water up to about 155-160, turned the heat off, then steeped for 20-30 minutes. Can someone explain the difference to me?

    What are you drinking now?

I really like it. I was waiting for Long Trail to come out with a "big" IPA, with places like The Alchemist, Hill Farmstead, and Lawson's producing IPAs that people are lining up to buy. It's got a great nose, taste, and finish...so I think it's well rounded. I'm a bit partial to Long Trail, but...
