    Best Kettle Port Configuration

Bobby, I had it working during a test run with water, but it seemed a lot different during an actual brew. I was super surprised by the lack of a trub cone at the bottom of my kettle - maybe it's just operator error. Do you know of any way to incorporate the non-submerged version into a TC...

    Best Kettle Port Configuration

I'm in the process of building my kettle for a small indoor electric BIAB setup - I wanted some input on the best kettle configuration before I buy parts. I have a 10gal kettle - I know that is way too small for some people, but I have actually been trying to go smaller and brew 3 gallon batches...

    First Time Whirlpooling with Pump

I tried whirlpooling with a Riptide and a Spin Cycle arm during my brew a few days ago, but was pretty underwhelmed by the results. I didn't have any sort of trub cone at the bottom of the kettle - all the cold break seemed to be spread out on the bottom of the kettle like it normally is. I had...

Quick Volume and Salt Addition Estimation

For some reason, I am having a hard time wrapping my head around this - I need to do a quick, somewhat accurate volume and salt addition estimate, as I am using a FastFerment 3gal - I need to maximize the space available. I want between 2.75 and 3 gallons in there without trub -I am planning an...

Jackie O's 'Who Cooks for You?' Clone

What about trying some pilsner malt? I would probably try some carapils as well to give it some more body, instead of giving it a ton of oats.

Oxiclean white residue on aluminum kettle

Interestingly, while I was waiting for the citric acid to ship, certain parts of the kettle actually started to rust - obviously that shouldn't happen... The citric acid seems to have done a decent job - but I really had to scrub with a scouring pad to remove a lot of it. The citric acid even...

Oxiclean white residue on aluminum kettle

Thanks, John. Any idea on how much to add? I think I need about 4 gallons of water in my kettle to get at all of it.

Oxiclean white residue on aluminum kettle

Believe it or not, the Star San may be doing the same thing. Here is a picture. The top is normal aluminum. The darker layer below it is what it looks like oxidized. The layer below that is what I am talking about. That is 2oz of StarSan mixed with water in the kettle.

Oxiclean white residue on aluminum kettle

I currently have water boiling - can I add anything right now? Phosphoric acid? I am assuming I want to boil inside of the pot after this stuff is cleaned off so that I can build up that oxide layer again.

Oxiclean white residue on aluminum kettle

I was recirculating hot oxiclean and water through my CFC and pump today - now I have a white buildup on the inside of my aluminum kettle. How do I get this off? I just rinsed out the system with clean water, and am boiling water in the kettle to try and see what will happen. Definitely not...

    Goodbye pulleys!

What speed is best for driving the rollers? Looks like this gearbox is geared for about 70RPM.

    Goodbye pulleys!

Thinking about building my own grain mill, and look what I found at work today! Don't need any pulleys, because it has speed control already built in.

Best way to swap hoses and reclaim wort during brew session

I am new to using a pump - I tested the Riptide I just bought with water and it works quite well. But my CFC will drastically throttle the exit velocity from the whirlpool arm, so after cooling my wort, I will have to swap a few hoses to remove the chiller from the fluid circuit. Does anyone...

Best tubing size to use with CFC

Thanks, I tested my pump for the first time last night - I believe my copper tubing has a thicker wall, so the ID is 0.25". The chiller works fine, so I don't plan on buying or building a new one, but I definitely cannot leave it inline when I whirlpool because of how much it restricts flow.

    Altered Pale Ale Water Profile

Martin, Does the sparge acidification sheet take into account the salt additions that are calculated for the sparge water on the water adjustment sheet? I'm trying to calculate the acid addition to my sparge water if I add most of the salts for my sparge water to the mash. Thanks

    Altered Pale Ale Water Profile

I am just calculating salt additions for a 3 gallon batch + 0.75 gallon loss due to grain absorption. With a 3 gallon fermenter, I don't have the freedom to just add a gallon of top-off water. According to Bru'n Water, the less bicarbonate I add, the lower my residual alkalinity (I mean, like...

    Altered Pale Ale Water Profile

If I don't add my sparge water salts to the mash, I would have an estimated mash pH of 5.41 If I do add all of the salts to my mash, I have an estimated pH of 5.25 I might just add like 2/3 of the sparge salts to the mash.

    Optimize Flow through Counterflow Chiller

I had already been thinking about doing that to the Spin Cycle arm. Thanks

    Altered Pale Ale Water Profile

How does the rest look? I remember reading something from Mitch Steele saying that Ca should be fairly high in an IPA profile.

    Optimize Flow through Counterflow Chiller

Yeah, I'm going to just try it out with water first. I probably won't include a T-valve until I have a permanent location for my setup - I will just disconnect the tube from the chiller and connect it to the whirlpool arm.
