Should I use a blow off tube or leave it?

When brewing beer you WANT headspace. Get a blowoff tube on that now- at least for the first 4-5 days. I dont need one as I always leave enough space for the kreusen to form and settle.

    So sick of bottling!

I had 3 batches I did myself but they were all 2 gallon variety- all bottled as well. I personally like the idea of cracking open a single beer of whatever I want anytime I want. Its a nice advantage. If I had to keg- I wouldnt brew nearly as much.

    Big Bottling Day Question -

Well I bottled the 7 gallons- not the 8-9 I thought. Either way, I took grav readings anyway- the Zest was done I know that. Everything else was in normal range- or even lower than expected- nonetheless- 3 more cases of beer to add to the pipeline Dunky Blonde Lemon Zest Hefeweizen...

    Big Bottling Day Question -

I have 3 carboys of beer I need to bottle today- only about 8-9 gallons :) I did a grav reading on one batch - and its done. Its been sitting about 25-28 days now. The other 2 however did not get any readings- part lazy- part didnt want to open and disturb anything- you know I...

    Adding water after primary fermentation

I write down exactly what I plan on doing- including water temperatures- hop schedules, additions- I even write down HYDRO READING! Because I will forget. Its really important to write down a check list so you dont end up with 2 1/2 gallons of wort for a 5 gallon batch

bottling bucket - swamp cooler question

Update: I didnt do it! I purchased more carboys etc. Its not worth the risk. Period! My time, my price for the ingredients, and then to potentially lose it- not worth it

Help maintaining ferment temps in Florida

How large a batch are you making? I find that if you do a 5G batch- you will be able to 'sink' the carboy / bucket in a swamp cooler (laundry tub, wrap some blankets around it to further insulate it) - rotate several 2 liter empty soda bottles filled with water / ICE- in there- in the...

    1-Gallon Brewers UNITE!

I have a 1/2 gallon growler we got from a beer making class - its a porter- and I cant wait to 'rack and pack' it . Sad that its a 1/2 gallon- but seeing that little guy in there inspired me a little. I've been avoiding reading much of this thread for a good reason. After 2 x 6 gallon...

    plans for first yeast harvest

I recently attended a local brew course- it was a casual fun afternoon of brewing 30 gallons of porter with about 30 other people. We went over everything, spoke directly with experienced brewers, as well as the owner of Port Jeff Brewing Co. It was a great experience- and we all got to...

noticing white spots on top of beer

Its hard to tell. It could be some unsettled trub, some kreusen, yeast or hops. If you saw the inside of my dry hopped Ale, it looks infected- but its not. Have a beer man, and dont worry

Inexpensive Wart Chiller Pump Idea to Share

Alot of ideas can spawn from this little setup. I dont waste alot of water at my home- ie: I dont run any water on the lawn all summer long- because its a waste. My kids and wife dont care that its not tropical green- and I dont because its such a waste. So I dont mind wasting a little...

How do you know when you have enough o2

The yeast has took off- within my 24 hour mark. Its been fermenting pretty good- Im going to wait to post my "problem with this batch" in a few weeks- (patience people!) after I get my FG. I missed my OG by a bunch- missed my sparge temp- not sure if that screwed up my efficiency-...

How do you know when you have enough o2

Interesting. I NEVER shook it that long. I guess it also has to do with how much space your carboy has- if it has more air- that will result it more violent shaking etc. Im also not worried about too much- more so- when is it enough... Billl all of my beer so far has...

How do you know when you have enough o2

I have been a shaker for the better part of my 9 batches. I usually shake till I get a nasty head on top- then pitch my yeast. That works out- I recently saw a video with an attachment to a tube- pvc with a single hole in it- causing o2 I would presume buy the wort flowing through...
