    Hop spider vs. false bottom

I built this: http://byo.com/build-it-yourself/item/2427-build-a-hop-spider-projects Only difference was I used a long piece of PVC pipe to support the spider and realized the heat from the boil caused the PVC to sag. Fixed it with a wooden dowel through the pipe. Five gallon paint strainer...

    wine / mead

I make t'ej (Ethiopian mead) and letting it sit for a long time with a continuous fermentation is basically what I do. I stick the fermenting t'ej in a fermenter (usually a gallon size) and taste it every week or so. When it gets to the level of sweetness I want it I rack it into an empty soda...

One brew done, one starting today.

Welcome to the obsession! Just from personal experience, the sooner you make the jump to all grain, the sooner you can tell SWMBO that you "need" the equipment. Happy brewing!

    Banana?!?!?

    Google "Chapeau Banana Lambic." Delicious!

    Equipment

All grain isn't that tough. You just have to keep a close watch on mash temps and aim for consistency. For large kettles check out restaurant supply stores. I scored a stainless ten gallon boil kettle for just over a hundred dollars at my local one.

Yeast starters and a mess on SWMBO's stove...

Had the same issue. Boil-overs can happen in an instant. Try this: http://www.midwestsupplies.com/fermcap-s-foam-inhibitor-1-oz.html Works like a charm for me.

    My beer is too dark

If your pot doesn't show any scorching and you can't detect any burnt/caramel aromas or flavors you probably aren't scorching your wort. It could be your boil time as that affects wort color, i.e. longer = darker. When you say you get a good boil do you mean vigorous like boiling water or a nice...

    Complete beginner seeking a mentor

Not to be flippant but the best advice most of use have ever received is RDWHAHB (relax, don't worry, have a homebrew). A few floaty bits aren't going to skew your readings too horribly. One of the main reasons for taking the readings in the first place is to check to see if fermentation has...

Advice on a Refrigerator Kegerator Conversion

No idea what pattern the lines may be in for your fridge, if they are there. I have my CO2 bottle outside of my fridge going through the side. I found exploded parts diagrams for my make and model ( a Roper) but I really stink at figuring out how everything fits together unexploded. I did see...

Advice on a Refrigerator Kegerator Conversion

I actually thought of cutting through that top/bottom divider on my kegerator too but found out that depending on the make/model you could have lines running through it. I eyeball measured mine and figure I might be able to squeeze four kegs in it but it isn't really practical. I always find I...

    Water

First some full disclosure: I've never added anything to my water. That being said, and I hope others agree, if I were you I would start off by getting a water report. If you're not sure of what is exactly in your water you won't have any way of determining what to add. Also, from John Palmer...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Plans to brew Northern Brewer's chocolate milk stout on Friday and working on a couple bitter recipes for Saturday and Sunday. Getting everything sorted out in hopes of entering the NHC.

Any other recent/to be new Dads?

I've got one that turned five a few months ago and another that's supposed to be here around the end of June. Beer consumption went waaay down but is slowly creeping back up to acceptable levels. The brewing is something SWMBO lets me do with no complaints. I just make sure she knows in...

Help me identify off flavor in first batch

Hey, The best thing for you to do would be to share the beer with someone else. Maybe take it to your LHBS and give a few bottles to the employees for some feedback. I've only been brewing for a couple of years but I've found that just letting someone taste my brews (or even having a...
