    DIY temp controller build

Sorry, guess it only goes to 35, good enough I think, unless you like beer-cicles.

    DIY temp controller build

I didn't have to split the DC adapter going into the thermostat, I left the jumper connected on the thermostat. Then I ran a wire from the Y terminal on the thermostat to the cooling relay, and a wire from the W terminal to the heating relay. The other end of the DC adapter was split and...

    DIY temp controller build

I did this same thing, with a Rite Temp thermostat, it cools down to 30 degrees, and has worked perfectly for me, it can control both cooling and heating, you just need one extra relay for the heating side. However, living in Texas, haven't needed the heating side yet.....

    Oxidation

I use a whisk to stir and aerate my wort as its cooling. I generally let it cool to around 110 before doing this, but definitely don't let it get down to 80 first. I don't think I've ever had a problem with oxidation by doing this, as it sounds like the flavor would be pretty apparent. But I...

    4 tap faucet positioning

Maybe I wasn't clear enough. I'm not necessarily looking to see how high to place the faucets, I think I have that figured out. I've separated my two options into separate photos to avoid any further confusion. Option 1 Option 2 Which one do you like? Looks like I've got two votes...

    4 tap faucet positioning

I would definitely put them higher up, but what I can't decide is if I should space them all evenly, or if I should space them two on the left and two on the right. The advantage to two left and two right is that I leave room for an emblem in the middle, and have the option to add a 5th tap...

    4 tap faucet positioning

I ordered 4 Perlicks the other day, they come in on Tuesday. I'm going to be installing them on an over/under refrigerator. I'm debating on how to orient the faucets. I've photoshopped two different orientations onto this picture to see how it would look. Either two and two as shown on the...

Adding wort to the secondary or keg?

I'm not concerned with color if it means negatively impacting the taste. I agree wort usually doesn't taste very good, just not sure how much effect 8-12 oz of unhopped wort in 5 gallons would have. I think I might still try a small-scale trial with 1/4 oz wort into a pint, and see how it...

Adding wort to the secondary or keg?

I brewed an Irish Red Ale a little over a week ago, and the color just didn't look right to me, so I went back to the LHBS and found out that I had used the scale incorrectly, and didn't get enough roasted barley or crystal 60. I'm not concerned much about the final product, I know it will...

    How good is your eye?

3.90, I imagine there's a exponential correlation with BAC, will test hypothesis later today.

Irish Red Ale St Fuad's Irish Red

I just brewed this yesterday, with a few minor alterations. 1) An extra pound of Vienna due to what I thought was low efficiency, but ended up with an OG of 1.066 anyways. 2) Boiled 90 minutes to achieve 5.5 gallons of wort, which means the fuggles boiled for 90 and the goldings for 15...

Where do I get Perlick 575ss?

Let me know how it works out. I've searched all over this board and couldn't find anybody who said they've ordered straight from perlick. I guess it was just my "If it seems to good to be true...." pessimism that's kept me from doing it.

Where do I get Perlick 575ss?

I was looking for them also, check out perlick.com, there is a "Tapping Catalog" you can download, which seems to suggest that you can order from them directly. If you can, their prices are incredible. I'm curious to know because I am about to build one of my own.

Pitched dry yeast before wort - Advice please

$1.60 at my LHBS, i pitched some more this afternoon. FWIW I wasn't unsure about the iodophor's effectiveness at killing yeast, bacteria, etc., I was mainly curious about the duration (10 sec.) that the yeast was in contact with the diluted solution.

Pitched dry yeast before wort - Advice please

That's my dilemma. What's the greater risk, pitching too much yeast, or waiting too long and risk infection? Is 22 grams for a 5.5 gallon batch really too much? This is a Pale Ale and from what I understand, the flavor is not too dependent on the yeast strain.

Pitched dry yeast before wort - Advice please

Thanks for the advice. I will wait 72 hours before I do anything. I am generally pretty good about being patient and optimistic, I just have to think that the yeast took a hit being poured into the iodophor, even if it was a ~1-1.5 oz / 6.5 gallon solution, and it was only there for about 10...

Pitched dry yeast before wort - Advice please

SWMBO and I were brewing EdWort's Haus Pale Ale yesterday, while consuming a few of EdWort's Apfelwein. Needless to say by the time it came to pitch the yeast neither of us were 100% focused. She's seen me rehydrate dry yeast 30 or 40 times now, but thats a different story. Anyways, the yeast...
