Planning my first AG brew day

Alright, I'm ordering my specialty grains and yeast tomorrow for a brew day next weekend. Yeast will be WLP001 since obk has it back in stock. I still have one concern and it has to do with water. My plan was to use spring water and not worry to much about it this time around since I've got a...

Canadian source for cheaper 2 row?

Here in quebec I go to mout international in Montreal (www.biereetvin.com), and they charge $37 if I remember correctly for 55lb of Canada malting 2 row. That's pick up price... It's all they sell at that price though. For specialty grains I order from ontario beer kegs.

What can I use as food grade seal on fermenter?

If you're pretty good with a caulking gun you could try making a gasket surface on the lid or pot with aquarium grade silicone caulking. It's FDA approved food grade. that way you wouldn't have an overlap, might be a pain to clean though.

    Grain Mills - Your opinion?

I just purchased a clone of the Barley Crusher from Ontario Beer Kegs, and it is pretty much what others say. It does what its supposed to but it's no cadilac thats for sure. I'm a little concerned how long the eccentric bronze bushings will last since I had to torque the hell out of the set...

Planning my first AG brew day

I forgot to mention the yeast, I was planning on using WLP001 but it appears that OBK doesn't have it anymore so I will be going with Wyeast 1056. I will do a starter 1.5L-2L of 1.040 wort (LDME) depending on age of yeast when I get it, aiming for a pitch rate of 1 million/ml/deg pl. As for...

Planning my first AG brew day

Alright, I've got all my gear together, all I need is a wort chiller which I'll DIY this weekend. I've set my sights on an American IPA recipe from OBK to be my first AG batch. I wont be buying their kit since I already have a 55lb sack of 2 row and a grain mill. The recipe calls for...

    Sanitizing flip top bottle caps

I always removed the bails and stored the caps in a pitcher full of starsan. As one bottle is filling you have enough time to place a cap on the previously filled bottle and snap it shut. Never had any problems doing it that way.

Looking for a thermometer for AG brewing...

I purchased the thermapen and I absolutely love it, I don't have my full system together yet so I haven't brewed with it yet, but I use it everyday for cooking. My steaks, sausages, chops and roasts all come out perfectly now without hacking them in half to check colour... Sorry I can't comment...

    Dogs

I can definitely see it in her, does she shed at all? The only hair Stella loses is when I comb her.

    Dogs

This is Stella, my 10 month old soft coated wheaten terrier. She's a handful but it's all worth it when she wants to snuggle up close for a nap. This was her the day I got her, 8 weeks old...

    First all grain brew

Nice looking beer, I just kegged my first gelatin fined beer today (a blonde lager) and I too was amazed at how clear it is. I actually lost some beer because I was watching the siphon hose waiting for the star san to pass and the beer to start, and didn't realize that what was flowing was the...

    Stir plate fan speed controller???

Thanks for the idea on the PWM dimmer module, just ordered one from amazon for my stir plate build, $5 CDN. Been searching all over for something a little more electrically sound than a Pot wired in series.

    Cold crashing in glass secondary.

Yeah starsan is definately the way to go, that way any air that gets into the fermenter will have at least passed through the starsan first. Just remember not to put more liquid in the airlock than can fit into ONE of the bulbs and you will be golden. Never tried the cotton before, guess it...

    Cold crashing in glass secondary.

Chances are very slim, depends on which airlock you have. In the video you saw the guy had a one way check valve designed specifically to not let any air no matter what. If you have the 3 piece airlock it will just suck the liquid from the airlock into the beer (unless you get some sort of...

    RIMS Tube = Pipe bomb?

Reminds me of that mythbusters episode where they took the PRV out of ordinary hot water tanks, when they popped they went clear through two floors and out the roof.

    Any refrigeration experts out there?

Yeah, the thermostat has one always hot, and one that switches on and off with temp changes. There should be no neutral that runs to the thermostat, the compressor's neutral is hard wired in the back of the fridge from the plug. The only neutral you should have in the housing should be going to...
