What's a good Sam Adams clone?

Oh yeah; their Latitude 48 IPA is what turned me onto IPA's in the first place, I could chug that stuff all day

Black gunk on the bottom of a new kettle

Just got a new kettle in, and I scrubbed it out - it looked clean as a whistle, but as I was drying the inside, I noticed the paper towel was jet black as I was drying the bottom - something that I couldn't see was staining the towels. So I scrubbed it again - same thing. So I scrubbed it two...

A few questions about a recipe

Sorry if this sounds dumb, but if the recipe calls for a 2.5 gallon boil and I go with 5 gallons instead, should I divide the hops by half or double the amount I use? Using double the water means there'll be more in solution, so I'd think I'd have to cut the amount in half - is this right?

A few questions about a recipe

So I just got a new recipe from Norther Brewer, the black IPA 5-gallon extract kit, and a few questions for anyone who knows: - The recipe calls for only dealing with 2.5 gallons through the boil, adding 3 gallons of water to the primary - can I adjust the recipe and boil 5 gallons instead of...

    Northern Brewer

I put in an order to get set up with new brewing equipment; ordered a ton of stuff, as well as a megapot with a valve, no thermometer. It arrives, I'm stoked that it got here on Friday so I'll be able to brew this weekend, and . . . it has two holes, the second being for a thermometer; the...

    When this will end?

Beer and cigars - two things that the more you learn, the more you realize how little you really know. Both are fun hobbies that hold tons of secrets and will keep your interest for decades

    Long-term aging questions

Buy a box of nice cigars, God of Fire, Man O War Armada, maybe a few cubans like Cohiba Siglo IV. With proper temperature and humidity control, cigars can last that long, especially full-bodied ones. Or a bottle of wine. But beer? No way it'll last that long

Woah, didn't know you could foment a beer; careful you don't get a blackeye or lose a tooth, I hear some beers fight dirty

    Diacetyl

There's no science behind the verdict; most like the jury just saw a big corporation, deep pockets and decided to go off the rails. The suit was a joke, a jackpot jury.

You know you're a home brewer when?

When one of your deal-breaking criteria for renting a new condo is if the patio has sufficient air circulation to brew in

    How much Diacetyl is Dangerous?

If this joker can win $7.2 million, imagine how much a theater worker can sue for or someone in a popcorn factory. Bottom line: this lawsuit is a joke; McDonalds-hot-coffee crap

few pics of maiden run on my new setup!

Oooh, so the pump is for the wort; that makes more sense. Seems I was confusing the pics; thought the clear hose was the wort hose

few pics of maiden run on my new setup!

That's the cooling hose, I think; from what I can see, the wort hose runs from the kettle down, then up into the platechiller, then up again, above the wort chiller, and into the white fermenting bucket

few pics of maiden run on my new setup!

Look at it - the wort goes up the tube to enter the platechiller at a higher elevation and then it exits the platechiller and goes further up before it goes into the fermenting bucket. Last I checked, gravity doesn't pull things up
