    Road Trip brewery visits

I'm about to go on a road trip from Chicago to Arlington, Vermont, then New Haven, CT, then down to Harrisburg, PA and back. I'm wondering if you have any suggestions as to must hit breweries along the way. Right now we're definitely going to make it to Ommegang, Cooperstown Brewery and...

    Dogs and used grain....

I used to save a gallon ziplock bag and give my dog a little bit with dinner everyday. But this got old after a while. Now I just give her a couple of cups to eat while I'm brewing, use a couple cups for dog treats and toss the rest.

Sweetwater Brewing Co. - Atlanta GA!

I lived in Atlanta for 3 months, I must have gone there 10 times. It is really a great place. If you have time, stop by Terrapin for a tour. I think it's a better tour but be sure to bring a DD, they give you a LOT to drink.

where to put hops this winter

I've got a first year cascade plant in a pot and I'm just wondering if it will be too cold outside during the Chicago winter since it's in a pot. My other options are an unheated detached garage or my basement, which stays about 50 degrees all winter. Any suggestions?

    Pin lock vs. Ball lock

I like pin locks better mainly because I never have a hard time getting the disconnects off. Sometimes the ball lock disconnects get stuck if they have been on a while. Plus I can get 6 ball lock in my kegerator but only 5 pin lock. But really it doesn't matter. I only switched from pin to...

    Recipe formulation

Thanks for the help, I ended up throwing it on the nottingham cake just because it was easier. Next time I'll try the S-04. This beer looked and smelled great, can't wait to try it.

    Recipe formulation

Alright, here's what I came up with. I decided to put in only Williamette because if I use all my .85 oz at 60 this puts me at right at 18 IBUs plus I clean up my inventory a little. I'm also thinking of replacing the notty with S-04. I have a notty cake I can put this on but I've also gotten...

S-04 - Not liking this yeast

I'm heating my strike water for a mild right now and I was thinking of using my US-04 but this thread has me nervous because so many people don't like the yeast. Normally I would go ahead and do it but I have lots of company coming this summer and this beer will be served to a lot of people so...

    Recipe formulation

Just scored some chocolate malt, I'm going to throw it in as you suggested. I can't believe how this one came together, it will probably be one of my best.

    Recipe formulation

Just remembered that I've got some Safale-04 also, would that go better than notty?

    Recipe formulation

Sounds pretty good. I'm only getting to 8.6 IBUs with my 1/2 oz of Fuggles at 60min. What other hops would go good with that to get me around 20 IBUs?

    Recipe formulation

Oh yea, I forgot about yeast. I've got notty and safale-05.

    Recipe formulation

Well I've recently been given some grain but I have no real experience in creating recipes on my own. I would like to use the grain and random assorted selection of hops I have on hand to do an impromptu brew tomorrow. Any suggestions on a recipe would be appreciated. As far as grain, I...

S-04 - Not liking this yeast

I've got a package sitting in my fridge but have yet to use it. Besides ESB, any suggestions on what type of beer it would be good with?

    Thank heaven for Brewmaster's Warehouse

I've actually noticed that he has stopped doing this on most of my orders lately. I stopped weighing my grain because it's always accurate but he used to give me extra hops. Usually 1.1 or 1.2 oz for every ounce I ordered, but now i noticed they are exactly one ounce. Not that I can blame...

    All Grain Setup

If you're going to do a full boil, I would do a dry run and make sure you can get 6-7 gallons to a boil. I tried 5 on my gas stove and is was a mess. I could get it to a boil if I put it across 2 burners and even then it took forever.

    Open fermentation

Anyone watch the Brewing TV episode on open fermentation? Good episode, it made me want to try an experiment. I want to do a 5 gallon batch then split it into two fermentors and do one open and one closed so I can compare the difference it makes. My question is, what kind of beer would lend...

To secondary or not to secondary...that is the question

I put it in the kegerator and I set my psi at 10 and leave it for about a week and it's good to go. Most get a little better with time, but for most of the beer styles I make they don't really need to be aged to be great.

To secondary or not to secondary...that is the question

When I started I was excited about the secondary just because that meant that I could mess my beer some more. After a while though I stopped doing them all together. Even when I need to add fruit or age a big beer for a while, I just do it in the keg. If I need something crystal clear then I...
