    Reusing Torpedo Hops

I routinely take my five minute and/or flameout hops, put them in a freezer bag and use as FWH in a subsequent batch. Works fine for me.

    Where do you buy Oxi-clean?

Get mine in the laundry detergent section of about any grocery store.

    Nottingham Yeast recall

Kappclark... A few weeks ago I bought ten nottinghams from the bad batch and, before learning of the recall, used a couple of them. Slow start, but once going worked ok and I followed up by dumping new wort on the yeast cake. Worked fine.... Both batches went to the expected FG and taste...

    Nottingham Yeast recall

Hope someone will let us know when they get their replacement.... I sent in several packets nearly 3 weeks ago and nothing.

    Burner questions

I can't imagine you being "seriously let down" by the SQ10. Works fine and heats like a banshee. I've used both.... like the SQ14 because of what I think is more precise burner control (I use it for stuff beside homebrewing) and also it seems to me the 14 is a bit more efficient in propane...

    Efficiency Calculation: include non-fermentable adjuncts?

Brewers friend (goggle it) has a brewhouse efficiency caluclator that's easy to use.

    Exploring "no chill" brewing

Someone will answer who knows more about it, but I also use a hop sack and take it out before draining into the NC container. I find the adjustment is still necessary, presumeably because even though the hops have been removed the oil is present and utilization continues. (I've only done...

What Brand Of Remote Dual Sensor Smoker Thermometer Do You Have?

I've had two of them... one was an accu-rite (which it wasn't. I don't know who made it) Customer svc thought the probe was bad and sent me another, but still had innacurate readings. The other was Taylor. The remote units on both worked OK, but the readings after a few uses drifted off...

    making charcoal

SOB... I don't know in pounds, but the batch I made last weekend came close to filling a five gallon bucket. I took a picture of the grill setup and finished charcoal but I'm not a paying member so apparently I can't attach it. Turkeyfoot.... I don't think I made this clear earlier, but the...

    making charcoal

Turkeyfoot--- oak is ideal but if that branch just came down you might want to give it some time... may work with green wood. never tried. I season it for a few months. Let me know how it comes out. One issue with the Weber is that I have to make charcoal three or four times to have...

    making charcoal

No, it doesn't hurt the grill. As to your question regarding how long it takes--start to finish quite a while, but your part doesn't last long. I usually do it when I'm smoking... made a batch last weekend so won't need to again for a while but will take some pics next time. I generally use...

    making charcoal

I'm wondering if there are others on here who make their own hardwood lump charcoal? I do it in my old Weber (usually use apple or walnut wood as we have a lot of it) and it turns out fine. Curious as to how others do it, what kind of wood they use, etc. The way I'm doing it works fine, but...

    smoker question

Makes sense... I've used a small lp smoker and it works fine. You'll save a bundle on lp with the big tank. I'm on a farm & have a 500 gal for heating. Ran a line for the brew burner. . . . LP that way is less than half what it is in 20 lb cylinders.

Yellow/white creepy crawly things in my beer!

Check this out: US FDA/CFSAN Defect Action Level Handbook It'll give you the accepted level of maggots and rat poop in processed food. Your beer might have within the FDA compliance standards.

    Beer and Brown Sugar Marinade

rsmith--- don't know what the original poster would say, but I think you'd be fine with barleywine. I've used it in other marinades and it works... also barleywine is great in beercheese, but that's another recipe

I think in NJ that's illegal as well....

    New Jersey chicken

We were butchering a couple of spring chickens in the back yard yesterday afternoon and an acquaintance stopped by to watch and have a homebrew. He said what we were doing was illegal in New Jersey. Is that true? It's a crime to butcher your own chicken for your own use in NJ? Tell me the...

    Beer and Brown Sugar Marinade

Yes, good recipe to post. I've used this and it is a good marinade... The only time I detect the beer taste is when using an ale heavy on the bittering hops. This same basic recipe, with a tad bit less brown sugar, is also excellent when reduced, thickened with corn starch, and used as the...

    beer cheese recipe anyone?

You must have jacked it up a bunch... 1/4 tsp hot sauce and a dash of cayenne in a pound of cheese and bottle of beer gives it a zip, but I've never seen it send anyone dashing for relief. Glad you liked it...sorry about the wife.
