    Glass Carboy Excitement

glass is a great material, but enough stress will break them. the question is only when and as others said, it is hard to see it coming. regarding carboys, they are CHEAP. At the same time, I woudn't be willing to pay $300-500 for a simple high quality 23l glass vessel either. I have still some...

Putting fermenter on a stir plate?

maybe you should consider that it is not rewarding for anyone to be shut down if they try to give someone their perspective (relevant or not), because you didn't bother doing your own legwork. I know it's not the silver platter, but google "agitation" and "bioreactor", spend a couple of months...

Putting fermenter on a stir plate?

MackerelQ, this was a rant and not meant personal as I stated. sorry, perhaps I should have been more clear. However, if anyone thinks that shoe fits, it's their choice if to put it on. the difference between little billy and a forum is that little billy has to go to school, but nobody has to...

    Tiny House Brewing

Depends on the person. For someone who likes to do and create their own stuff - be it brewing, building, even cooking, painting, a trailer or tiny home is going to be a very poor choice unless they have some decent sized other buildings available. However, there are other people who live in...

    Off-flavors with S-04/English ales

I should have read that thread earlier. I did a Brown with S-04, that was kind of funny. Not really bad, just not really right either and I blamed it on myself not being too familiar with the style. I used the same yeast (another generation) in an IPA, with no issue (but that can be just as well...

Putting fermenter on a stir plate?

Agitation during fermentation; i.e. enable sufficient interaction between media and the 'bugs', is nothing new and there is a ton of papers and more general literature out there once you go beyond beer. I have questioned myself if I should try it out or not and reminded myself that I never...

    Warm Fermented Lager Thread

WLP820 is supposed to be Wyeast 2206, which is Weihenstephan 206 and not Weihenstephan 34/70 https://www.jaysbrewing.com/2011/10/11/white-labs-to-wyeast-chart/ https://www.morebeer.com/products/wlp820-octoberfestmarzen-lager-white-labs-yeast.html...

Ultra low grain absoption with drain/fine crush?

just a reminder regarding measuring volumes; obviously measure them at similar temperature (not cold water and just before the boil)

    Warm Fermented Lager Thread

I guess I'm not the only one to find out that it isn't a good choice: An old source describes it as follows: Wyeast 2206 GF Bavarian Lager A Carlsberg type yeast and most widely used lager strain in the world. Produces a distinct malty profile with some ester character with a crisp finish. Will...

What is your 'must have on hand' style?

3 things: something for myself, something for the crowds (typically IPA and/or light lager/pilsner), something new (seasonal or a clone of something I cannot buy here). I also found that having some sort of homebrew soda/lemonade on tap to be a good idea.

so what is the perfect yeast in your opinion?

Too much oxygenation on my procedure?

you cannot over-aerate with air, but you certainly can with O2. O2 is nice if you have large quantities or would like to bubble within a short time. if time is not the issue, which it doesn't seem to be for you, I wouldn't bother keeping a tank of O2. does your procedure dissolve enough O2 in...

So.... what is "Ale" by any other standards??

there is a lot of nonsense in there, but if you try hard enough to read it fully objectively, I'm left with the same sentiment. however there is often some grain of truth in the dumbest statement. IMHO here it is mentioning the short shelf life we often expect from homebrew. hey, isn't that a...

The bitterness mouth feel of early hopping vs late hopping with same IBU

don't worry too much of hitting a certain IBU # or even decimals. One must be pretty good to taste reliably the difference between 10 IBU and 15 IBU bitterness in your scenario, since the flavour profile will be very different due to shortened boil times and 3x the hops.

    Warm Fermented Lager Thread

my last experiment using lager yeast for warm fermentation was certainly my very last one. I've done split batches of light blondes before and the warm fermented beer was not as clean as the cold fermented portion, but still drinkable. This time I tried a bock with W206. Based on previous...

    brew in a basket

Have one, different source however, but looks the same. NOT good!!! my handle is hooked in the other way and it falls off once you lift and something is in it. mesh is not properly welded and you gonna cut yourselves while cleaning. long story short, I had to rework the thing to make it save...

Chlorine or plastic taste in brew using RO and additions

I did not know that. And I'm getting excited about it, because as per another thread, I'm looking for a "good & cheap" catalytic carbon filter and struggle with manufactures/vendors who are in that business, but never heard of characterizing catalytic filters by something like a peroxide...

Chlorine or plastic taste in brew using RO and additions

Something on the bisufite; yes it works, but keep in mind to "declare" it when you give it to someone. It can result in (real) allergic reactions and those who are allergic might not think about it, since it is typically not associated with (commercial) beer.

Chlorine or plastic taste in brew using RO and additions

Possible IF you have half a litre of sanitizer in the beer - but isn't there something else wrong with that?

Ansbach Germany water analysis from Ward Labs / Question

North America has the philosophy that a disinfectant should be detected at the point of use. Germany has the philosophy no chemical at the point of use. That does not mean they wouldn't use it, but it should not be in the water you drink. I say should, because they are allowed to have it in...
