    Vorlauf or no vorlauf?

Blow off tube size and its effect

No, I don't think that would have an effect. As long as there is a place for the CO2 to escape without pressure building. Is the lid comingo off because of a pressure issue? I don't have a big mouth bubbler... but if there's too much pressure, beer line might be too tight to allow blow off...

    newb carbonating a keg!

I set the regulator to 30 psi for 36 hours. Unhook the gas (I don't have a pressure relief valve) and purge all the co2 out, turn the regulator all the way down, hook the gas back up and set the regulator to 10-12psi and leave it for a week or so. After the initial 36 hours it's pretty well...

    Mini Fridge Fermentation Chamber

I wouldn't think so. Your temp controller will kick it on and off when the beer needs it to no matter how the cold air is getting in the fridge.

Should I turn my oatmeal stout into a coffee stout?

I had a brown ale that I was disappointed in because of the bland flavor, so I added cold brewed coffee to the keg. So no change in recipe, obviously. It turned out just ok. I had "dry beaned" before also and I think the cold brew was the better way to go. A little goes a long way though.

Questions about my brewhouse efficiency calculations

Until you lock in your process and are able to repeat it exactly, your efficiency will change from batch to batch. It will drop with a bigger grain bill too because you need more water to rinse the same % of sugar from more grains. It will also change depending on where you get/crush your...

    Dip tubes

For my bottling bucket and cooler HLT, I use an appropriately sized drilled stopper and a length of vinyl tubing stuck through the stopper hole. To disassemble, you just pull it apart. Can't help you if you are talking a kettle. I have SS fittings that I don't intend to take apart very...

    krausening and diacetyl rest

That is also the method I'm going with. Big fan of Brulosophy. I think I will add the krausen step after the d-rest if I need it. From what I've read, krausening isn't just for diacetyl but also helps attenuation. This is my first attempt at a lager and I'd like to get it right the first...

    krausening and diacetyl rest

I read that krausening helps a lot with diacetyl but I would still like to do a diacetyl rest to be sure. Anyone else do this? What kind of timeline and temps did you do? I brewed a maibock (5.5 gallon batch, 1.076 OG) that has been fermenting for ~36 hours at the moment. I saved off a...

    1/2" Silicone to 3/8" Copper

I don't think you're supposed to use hose clamps on silicone. It can work, but I've tried it and it doesn't take much to tear up the end of the hose with the clamp digging into it.

    Good LHBS or Great LHBS?

I've only ever gone after work. So not quite as bad. I would have to be pretty desperate to make that trip from home. The first place closed, the second place is just about as far as my preferred one. Plus it's also a brewery and tap room so I can get a beer :mug:

    Good LHBS or Great LHBS?

It's about half hour from where I work, in the other direction of where I live, so about an hour from my house.

    Brewing on a Weeknight

I brewed for the very first time on a weeknight (coming up on two years ago). It was a miserable stupid mistake. In bed at 2am, wide awake thinking about everything that went wrong.

    Good LHBS or Great LHBS?

I'm on my third place. My current place is so far away from my house that it's a PITA but it's the best one so far. Helpful if I ask but they don't hover around you while you're trying to get your grains measured and milled. The first one I went to, the guy wasn't helpful at all. Just kind...

    Yeast Starter Help

How do you know when it's done? I've made one starter before and there wasn't much krausen (at the times I looked at it) and when it's on the stir plate everything is mixing around so nothing settles out. Also, for the volume question, I would crash and decant after the first step and then...

    Yeast Starter Help

I'm planning my first lager, a 5.5 gallon Maibock. The target OG is 1.072. I have a 2L flask and stir plate. Here's my plan, please take a look and provide any input! The yeast numbers are from brewersfriend.com yeast calculator (according to that calculator, I need 547B cells): 1)...

Half gallon fermentation. Have you done it?

i've brewed a normal sized batch and saved off just enough to put into a growler for experiments. the only downside is bottling is a bit of a PITA because it still takes time and effort to sanitize everything and rack and you only get a bomber bottle or two filled. but it's doable if you're...

    Blonde Stout critique

Just noticed this 6 months later :D I did brew it. I put whole beans into secondary. I'm at work right now so I don't have my notes as to how much. If there is a next time I will tone down the coffee probably by half. As it aged, it started to taste kind of weird. I've heard coffee can...

Post your "whoops" moments- messes, etc

Forgot to put my SS braid in the bottom of my mash tun. Opened the valve to vorluaf and nothing came out as it slowly dawned on me what an idiot I am. Briefly thought about reaching down into the hot mash and trying to attach it before realizing that's even dumber. Ended up dumping the whole...
