    ProMash Question

I would like brewing software that accounts for the flavor added by late hops and dry hopping. I've bene using Brew calculus but they don't factor late hop additions. Does Pro Mash or any other brewing software that you'd reccommend? Thanks!

4 gal. fresh cider started (newbe)

thanks for the tips. I think I missed the boat on pectin for this time around though since I'm about 4 weeks into fermentation. Its clearing but not clear yet. I took a taste test last night. It was tarter than I expected and tasted pretty good, but there was a distinct fart smell...

4 gal. fresh cider started (newbe)

I did pretty much the same thing about 4 weeks ago in a glass carboy. I'm waiting for it to clear before bottling but its really not getting all that clear. I don't want to let it sit on the yeast more than another week or so and I don't have the fridge for a cold crash. What do you all think?

    Campden tablets?

If I do use the campden 1. How much is a recommended dose? My bottle does not say. 2. After I add the Campden, do I put on the airlock? 3. How long do I wait to pitch my yeast? Thanks!!

    diagnose these hops

I've heard from an episode of Basic Brewing Radio that Hops do look beat up toward the end of the season, especially the lower part. The bottom 4 feet of my plants look similar, yellow leaves, lots of brown spots, but my harvest is still looking good. How are the cones looking on your plant?

    Strange brown

Hi, here are my first year hops, I've been really happy about them growing and now I'm thinking about harvest. They feel like they are starting to dry and I can finally see the yellow powder but from what I've read I expected them to feel a lot more papery before they are ready. Today I've...

Cider from crab apples - no press

nah, not a smart ass, I'm sure there's a lot of variation, how much of a difference does using the pectic enzyme make? can I get the same result by using more elbow grease?

Cider from crab apples - no press

Does anyone know the X pounds of apples = X gallons of cider formula?

Can Hard Cider Be Made With Fresh Apples?

I'm starting the hunt in northern NJ for Crab apple trees in parks and on the street for use in the fall cider. Are there any varieties of apples that should not be used, are unsafe for eating? I'm hoping that anything that looks like an apple should be safe. Thanks!

    Bury side vine???

I read somewhere that you can bury a lateral vine and it will turn into a rhizome... any truth to this? I planted my first year hops this year and they are looking great so I'd like to have a few more to plant next spring.

    Can somebody explain a MLT

I don't know how much of my brewing cred I'll lose by suggesting this, but I've had a lot of success using the brew in the bag method. 1. Get a big grain bag. 2. Put the bag in the pot 3. Fill the pot with water then the bag with grain 4. Mash 5. Remove bag and grain along with it. I think...

    Barleywine question

well its been about 6 weeks since I pitched the champagne yeast and its still bubbling. Should I just let it keep going? Rack it? What do you say? I decided to use the 1118 to because I thought the British ale yeast would not be able to handle the alcohol. maybe I was wring about this, I...

Harvesting Rogue Pacman from bottle - what I learned

I hate to even ask this question... but do we know if Rogue uses a different strain of yeast for bottling? I've heard of some Belgian breweries doing that.

    Primary in a carboy?

pouring through a funnel works, especially if you want to pour through a strainer bag to get out hops from the bottom of your brew pot. Your other option is to siphon. You fill your tube with sanitizer, put your brew pot on a table and the carboy on the floor. put your finger on the bottom of...
