    How to avoid yeasty taste

I would agree with this. I have made a couple wheat beers and they were both very "tart". I thought it was the yeast so I switched to a clean american yeast like 1056 in my most recent wheat batches without much difference. What I think is that having too much wheat in the grain bill is the...

how long to let beer sit.

What type of beer are you brewing? In most cases it is not necessary to rack to a secondary fermenter. I used to use a secondary all the time, mainly to help clarify. Now I leave in the primary for the entire fermentation period and it comes out fine.

    Hoppy Wheat Help

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I really want hop flavor to come through so I'm not sure if 21 IBUs is enough. I use ibrewmaster and that is what it measured for hops. Do you think it will have decent hop flavor?

    Hoppy Wheat Help

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I just want to make sure I get good hop flavor. I use ibrewmaster and it measures IBUs of this recipe at

Honey IPA (w/ some wheat?) recipe---critique please!

I am not an expert at designing recipes but I don't think you have enough late hop additions to get good flavor and aroma. I would bump up late hop additions as well. 2.75 lbs of honey malt may also be a little strong. You might think about adding a couple pounds of honey instead. Just a couple...

    Hoppy Wheat Help

I love wheat beers and especially Boulevard's 80 Acre Hoppy Wheat. I recently brewed Jamil' Evil Twin and love the idea of all late hop additions. How does the wheat recipe look below? 5 Gallon Batch - 60 Minute Boil 6 lbs 2 Row 1 lb flaked wheat 3 lbs white wheat .5 oz amarillo 20 minutes...

    Yeast Washing Illustrated

Would that indicate an infection? My question was more in line with pitching tonight being too early. Not necessarily being worried about infection. Thanks for the link! I couldn't find it searching.

    Yeast Washing Illustrated

So do you think I can go ahead pitch into my brew I am making tonight or should I let the starter ferment longer? Also, I couldn't find your article but would be interested in reading it.

    Yeast Washing Illustrated

Here is a pic of what is floating on top of the starter.

    Yeast Washing Illustrated

I made a 1.034 starter from some washed yeast yesterday and there are no signs of fermentation in the airlock nearly 24 hours later. I know that activity in airlock doesn't mean anything but there isn't enough wort to take a hydro sample. Any thoughts? No krausen has formed yet. There are a...

As long as they are sealed tight I don't think you have anything to worry about.

    Rinsed Yeast Repitching

Would it be safer to use two mason jars of washed yeast? I have another one available and could pitch two if it would help.

    Rinsed Yeast Repitching

It is a 6 gallon batch. The picture is deceiving but the measurements indicate it is just 1oz. I don't have a stir plate and only have a half gallon container for starters.

    Rinsed Yeast Repitching

Here is a pic of some yeast I washed. I want to use it in an IPA (1.058) and realize I will need a starter. I have read many threads about it but am still confused of how big a starter I will need. It seems like all of the calculators require fairly subjective assumptions that can...

    Hello from Kansas

Good to see a fellow Kansan on HBT Where are you from in Kansas? Also good to see Kansas breweries getting their kits cloned at the big online shops. I just saw that Hank is Wiser in Cheney got their Porta Pottty Porter on Austin Home Brew's Clone list.

    Fermentation with Starter

Thanks for all the input. It was going pretty strong this morning. Since I had never done a starter I just assumed it would take off faster. I pitched at about the same temp as the starter fermentation temp. The starter was 1.75L from rinsed yeast.

    Fermentation with Starter

How quick should fermentation start if you're using a starter? My starter was fermenting pretty good when I dumped it in and it's been six hours and I have nothing.
