UPDATE - First Brew - IPA

Yes, the temp controller is the Johnson A19. Right now i've been going off the temp strip taped to the side of the carboy. Last check the wort is between the 66-68 range with ambient at 60-64. So tape to the glass of the carboy?

UPDATE - First Brew - IPA

Completed the first brew this morning. True Brew Indian Pale Ale. Super pumped and hopefully everything comes out well. Just wanted to go over my steps and any lessons I learned a long the way. 1. Sanitized everything. Use my 5 gal boiling pot, filled it with 2 gallons of water and 1/4 oz...

Ferment Fridge at 55 degrees... this ok?

Ok, yeast being used is Muntons Ale Yeast. Heard it's pretty standard, nothing fancy. http://www.northernbrewer.com/shop/munton-and-fison-ale-yeast.html Optimal temp 57-77. Right in the middle should be fine.

Ferment Fridge at 55 degrees... this ok?

Ok, went with the Johnson A19. Got it set on 68 and my temperature is running in the 64-68 range. I think we's ready to go! Thanks for the help!

Ferment Fridge at 55 degrees... this ok?

Not sure on Yeast. It's at the house but it came with the True Brew Indian Pale Ale extract kit. I'm on the way to the brew store to pick up an external thermo. Sounds like the best option for my situation. Thanks guys!

Ferment Fridge at 55 degrees... this ok?

Ok, got the mini fridge rigged up for the carboy ferment. What I did is folded the ice tray to the back of the fridge, and put the thermostat for the fridge itself in contact with the ice tray. This way the thermostat is at the coldest spot possible, turning the compressor off more...

First Brew! True Brew India Pale Ale

In regards to fermenting temperature, i've seen the 70-78 degree range works. After doing more research it sounds like the ideal temperature is more in the 65 range. With that said, I do have a mini fridge and plan to make some tweaks (power timer or A19) to get in that temperature range...

First Brew! True Brew India Pale Ale

Would pouring from pot to carboy through a strainer provide enough aireation? Sounds like I need to give it a good shake and maybe pour between pot and carboy a few times.

First Brew! True Brew India Pale Ale

Good advice thank you. I do plan to brew this one again as I enjoy IPA's.

First Brew! True Brew India Pale Ale

Keep me posted on how you come out. Sounds like i'm looking at sticking close to the recipe with a 45 minute boil. Sound like most folks transfer to a secondary during fermentation. As of right now I have one glass carboy, but may pick up a secondary. I'm assuming i'll syphon from one to the...

First Brew! True Brew India Pale Ale

Thanks for the replies! I've been doing some more research and have come across a few more diddys... Steeping and more boil volume. To steep in more water vs less water. Sounds like the opinion is split. Thoughts? It also sounds like upping the size of the actual boil itself (from 1-1/2...

First Brew! True Brew India Pale Ale

Thanks! 60 min over 45 boil makes sense. Same holds true with ferment and bottle time. The longer the better (to an extent).

First Brew! True Brew India Pale Ale

Last night I purchased all my equipment for my first extract brew. Going with the True Brew - Maestro Series India Pale Ale. I've done a good bit of research and wanted to go step by step on my plan of attack. Below is basically the directions from the Home Brew Box with my input and...
