Low FG - caused by high ferm temp?

Not only is it possible that your hydrometer isn't properly calibrated, it is possible that your thermometer isn't. If you do feel that mash temperature is the suspect, then realize that mashing too LOW is what would actually give you a more ferementable wort (leaving you with a lower final...

Russian Imperial Stout with Denny's Favorite 50

1.030 FG is the official high end of the style guideline. Dennys Favorite (in my limited experience) isn't the best attenuator and rarely do people get the 74-76% attenuation that the strain advertises. I also tend to like RIS's on the high end of the FG spectrum. All of these things stated...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Brewed 8 gallons of the recently published in BYO Magazine "Kick Ass Brown" clone from C.H. Evans brewing today. Was always my favorite beer from the Albany Pump Station so I couldn't resist! I've been on a bit of a streak lately....today was my 5 brew session in 23 days!

    What are you drinking now?

Homebrewed IPA. 7.5% abv and nearly 100 IBU's. Columbus, Citra, Amarillo, and Simcoe hopped. Used a whopping 1.5 pounds in a 9 gallon batch!

    Single Tier Brutus Clone.....Another One!

Makes sense. I brewed my second batch on the system this weekend and also ran a test which made me realize I'm definitely having exhaust problems. When I started my batch, I split my strike water between my HLT and my BK then heated up both. The HLT got to 180F in the same time the BK got to...

Can a plate chiller be hassle-free?

40 batches with my plate chiller thus far and no problems at all. I do use a hop spider and after the brew day I back flush the chiller for 2 minutes, forward flush it for 2 minutes, then fill it up with warm pbw water and let it soak for an hour or two before draining it. When I'm feeling...

    Bad Brew day

I had a "fairly stuck sparge" today.....never actually stopped running off but the runoff was really slow, I collected a half a gallon less than anticipated, and I couldn't keep the "fill side" of the tubing going to the pump solid. My culprits were that I was brewing a batch with 40 pounds of...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Brewing my 40th batch tomorrow and figured I'd go with a 10 gallon batch that has 40 pounds of fermentables in it! Maple Imperial Stout that may be destined for some type of wood aging down the road.

    Heady Topper

Rather than 2 row I'd suggest considering using Thomas Fawcett Optic as a substitute. Midwest Supplies describes it as "A floor-malted barley malt from a single barley variety (Optic), and produced by a centuries-old, family-owned maltster. Optic is another malt considered to be one of the...

    Single Tier Brutus Clone.....Another One!

Thanks. My first batch on the system didn't seem to have any problems. Boil kettle got everything up to a boil very quickly and with the ball valve for the gas opened ever so slightly. I'll have to wait until I taste the final product to make sure the burners aren't too high / risk scorching...

    Single Tier Brutus Clone.....Another One!

Thanks Bob. The problem is that (with my 20 gallon kettle) I can't even see the flame with the kettle on the stand. What I was already thinking of doing (to make lighting the burner easier) is drilling one or two 1/2" holes in the wind shield. Hopefully these holes would allow me to light the...

Show us your sculpture or brew rig

Still adding some finishing touches like 3 piece ball valves for the outflowing side of the pumps, an inline oxygenator on the wort out side of the chiller, etc. Stand is designed to accommodate my current 15, 15, 20g kettle setup as well as larger kettles if I expand in the future.
