    So who's brewing this weekend?

Brewed a 10 gallon batch of an imperial milk chocolate porter today. Used 1# of unsweetened dutch cocoa powder and 2# of lactose in the boil. OG 1.070 and hoping for a FG around 1.020 or so. Going to be adding cocoa nibs to secondary and if I want even more chocolate in the final product...

    What are you drinking now?

A homebrewed Rye IPA with Citra and Simcoe.

    Dry hopping a RIS

I don't think you are going to revive 9+ month old dry hops. Add some more dry hops now if you want the beer to have a hoppier nose and like the base beer enough at this point in time to be willing to drink it in the next couple of weeks.

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Brewed an all New Zealand hopped IPA yesterday with Riwaka and Motueka hops. 6.5% abv, 60 ibu's, 2 row, munich, and carapils for the malt bill, plus no hop additions before the final 25 minutes of the boil (hop burst technique). I add my flame out additions to 120F wort to also further...

    Bell's Oracle

Commercial Description is always a decent starting point... Our take on the West Coast-style Double India Pale Ale, The Oracle places hop intensity first & foremost, making only the slightest concession to malt & balance. The fireworks start with the aromatic punch of dry-hop sessions with...

    Cupcake Beer?

A guy in my homebrew club makes a German Chocolate Cake Stout and Earth Bread and Brewery in Mt. Airy PA makes a Red Velvet Cake Ale that is tasty/inspiring. It uses an English Dark Mild as a base and manages to mimic the flavor of cream cheese frosting / butter cream!

    What got you into homebrewing?

I had gone through a 2 year beer trading spree where I did 200 trades in that time. Once I started realizing just how much I was spending in retail purchases coupled with shipping costs, I decided that if I was going to put a good amount of money into beer I'd put it into learning how to make...

    Did you break even yet?

I disagree with your claim that ultimately brewing must be compared to a living expense if one wishes to determine if they are "breaking even" since neither homebrewing nor buying beer from a retail distributor (the comparable alternative) are necessary to live. When asking oneself to assess...

    What's in your fermenter(s)?

Applewood Smoked Cinnamon Pomegranate Ale and a Rye Saison with East Coast Yeast ECY08 Saison Brasserie Blend.

    Did you break even yet?

Sentiment appreciated. In addition to that, your post reminds me of an observation I've always had. Most people limit their cost estimate to these 3 things., When I quote my cost I also include the cost of propane and a misc. cost for things like salts / yeast nutrient / whirfloc / etc...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Yeah sounds ridiculous and will probably be terrible I know! I'm brewing my entry into a homebrew club competition tomorrow. My homebrewing club runs a competition that encourages people to push the envelope and get outside of their comfort zone. You are forced to pick special ingredients and...

    Did you break even yet?

I have a brewing partner who owes me money towards our costs so I have been tracking all of them...nothing to do with being anal (although I am anal!). I'm 41 batches in and my cost on a 6 pack ranges from $2 - $8 but I'm buying grain through a homebrew club group buy at $0.67 cents per lb...

    best beer you ever made!

Probably the one I'm drinking right now. 7.5 ABV, 100 IBU, IPA made with 4 different hop varieties (columbus, citra, amarillo, and galaxy) added at 6 different stages (including a 2 stage dry hopping) in the whopping amount of 24oz for a 10 gallon batch!

comercial examples of simcoe, amarillo and citra

Lawsons Finest Liquids Double Sunshine is an all Citra brew. So is Sierra Nevada Torpedo but it pales in comparison to the LFLDS.

    What are you drinking now?

Homebrewed IPA - 7.5% abv, 100 ibu's, Columbus, Citra, Amarillo, and Galaxy hops added at 6 different times including a 2 stage dry hop. A ridiculous 24oz of hops used to make a 10 gallon batch. One of my best homebrews to date.

    Did you break even yet?

If I estimate the value of my homebrew at a meager retail value of $50 per 24x12oz bottles (it's worth every penny), it will take me about 20 months to pay off my entire investment (all equipment and ingredients) as I'm only 16 months in and I'm 87.5% of the way paid off. Of course this doesn't...

Is there a big difference between Canadian 2-row and Premium 2-row?

I've been happy with my Canada Malting 2-row purchase compared to Briess, but I mainly use it for super hoppy and super roasty beers myself.

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Competing in my homebrew clubs "Iron Brewer" competition where we are challenged to make weird beers with ingredients and techniques that are out in left field. I'm going with an apple wood smoked cinnamon pomegranate ale fermented with WLP380 hefeweizen IV yeast that I will brew on Saturday!

Low FG - caused by high ferm temp?

Of course beer samples had pre carbonation never feel that thick to me either unless they are imperial beers that were mashed high. But again carbonation (or the lack there of) would have no effect on the final gravity reading. Therefore the hydrometer and thermometer off calibration...
