If Only I Knew Then What I Know Now

Oh yeah for sure! On my first 5 gallon brew I used a 5 gallon jug for primary with a standard air lock. Boom! Crap everywhere! Now I use 6.5 gallons and blow off tubes. I just recently started routing mine down the handle of a gallon jug to keep everything firmly in place.

If Only I Knew Then What I Know Now

“Only a fool learns from his own mistakes. The wise man learns from the mistakes of others.” ― Otto von Bismarck Okay veteran brewers, time to give up the goods! What are some things you've learned the hard way that you wish you would have known when you were just starting? For example, I...

What I did for beer today

My O2 tank was dead today and I didn’t realize it till pitching time! Today was the first time I’ve had to shake and pray! Hopefully the old truffle shuffle will come through for me!

What I did for beer today

Stupid blow off hoses never seem to want to stay nicely submerged underwater where I put them, so I’m exercising my best redneck ingenuity. Turns out the blow off tube fits perfectly down the handle of a water jug. Muahahaha! Problem solved!

What I did for beer today

You are probably spot on. Aerated quite a bit w an O2 wand. Pitched cold slurry into wort @ 65. Original pic was taken about an hour after pitching. Looks a lot more normal this morning. You’re right about the headspace too!!

What I did for beer today

Not sure if I screwed up.. 5th brew ever. I wanted to springboard off the Witbier I just finished and kegged, so I saved all the trub and refrigerated it. I ran the same recipe, and got the right OG when I pitched, but holy mother of pasta look at this! Wonder how that’s gonna turn out??

    Newbie BIAB Newcastle clone help

Thanks McKnuckle. After couple days of force carbing, this turned out great. Actually does taste pretty close to a Newcastle!

What came in the mail for you today?

Whoop Whoop! Transform into Optonot Prime!!!

New to kegging. What size CO2 cylinder should I get?

Yeah that part should be pretty negligible. It's still a treat for me, compared to my pre-corny-conversion days when I was manually hand-pumping this stupid plastic reservoir full of air pressure to get cleaner through the kegerator lines! :)

New to kegging. What size CO2 cylinder should I get?

For me it's one of those "totally depends" things. If I'm just putting serving pressure on already-carbonated kegs and swapping them out I'd say at least 10 or more out of a 5LB tank. If I'm force carbing at 30psi and blowing off headspace several times it changes things. I'll also be lazy...

What I did for beer today

Took a really close-up video of my cider furiously fermenting. Can’t stop watching it. Wonder if I can sanitize a GoPro...

    Newbie BIAB Newcastle clone help

She is cleaning up nicely. Tomorrow is 14 days, but I still see the occasional bubble go through the airlock. Was planning on kegging and crashing tomorrow, but wondering if I should give it a couple more days.

New to kegging. What size CO2 cylinder should I get?

Here’s a pic of the 5lb tank that came with my kegerator and the 25lb from my local grow shop. Definitely take space into account. Growers use CO2 to help boost their veg stage, and their regulators are configured a bit differently. When you get a regulator I HIGHLY recommend choosing one with...

New to kegging. What size CO2 cylinder should I get?

Anecdotally a 5lb tank lasts me several rounds of two 1/6 kegs (5 gal each) in my dual tap kegerator. I’d say I refill it every 4 rounds of 2 kegs if not longer. I’m continually surprised by how long they last. Obviously make sure you check everything for leaks, etc. When you get around to...

What I did for beer today

I was going to buy one of those, but after reading some reviews, I'm convinced it will still break if I drop it, just in half rather than shattering. I'm just gonna have to treat it like a glass bowl and buy several at a time with the expectation that my clumsy self will go through them. :)

What I did for beer today

Do you push 30 through the normal CO2 port and let sit for 48 or do you reverse your fittings and force carb through the tube?

What I did for beer today

<Say to self> “I Should not buy several expensive Tilt wireless hydrometers. How will I possibly spin that?” <Repeat>

What I did for beer today

Tried unsuccessfully to find a hydrometer that won’t break when I drop it.

    IPA Aggro

Thanks GOA! There seems to be a solid consensus that NEIPA is the way to go. I just got some timely email spam from NB specifically about NEIPA kits they have available so I'll probably try one of those! Thanks also to Jag and DT for the replies!
