What are you doing for National Beer Day 2016?

I'm sending out an email to a few of my local peeps inviting them to my basement taproom tomorrow evening in honor of the day. I'll also be celebrating the tapping of a Red Rye Pale Ale (a fast carb sample using a carb-cap was pretty sweet!). I've also got an American Pale Ale and a DIPA on tap...

What I did for beer today

Gelled a Robust Porter that I had crashed on Monday. Friday will be keg day!

First Attempt w/Bru'n Water for an IPA

So I'll admit you are looking pretty good for having almost no salting, but the point of salting is to bring the profile closer to desired. Assuming the profile you used for the moment, instead of the good suggestion from PeteNMA about using a better profile... You should try bringing...

    Jute or Sisal twine experience

FWIW, I found 50' bundles of Coir rope at Lowes. Since it was 50', I did exactly what Xico talks about above (pics).

    2016 Hop Growing Thread

Southern CT. It's actually snowing today. Overnight temps this week are predicted to be below freezing several nights. OTOH my rhizomes, in their little plastic baggies as shipped, and stored in the butter tray of the fridge, have sprouted little shoots. Should I plant the rhizomes? The beds...

What I did for beer today

Kegged ten gallons of Rye Pale ale. The aroma from the dry hops is pretty sweet. Looking forward to this one.

    2016 Hop Growing Thread

More build pics now that it's done (and again sorry for cross posting in the 2014 thread) And BTW my rhizomes came yesterday. We're expecting some sub-freezing overnight temps next week so I'm just going to leave them in the fridge for now and plant them next weekend (reminder: southern CT).

    2016 Hop Growing Thread

Yes, exactly. It's supposed to contain the roots because apparently, although we humble souls are trying to grow our hops plants, after a while, they can becom an invasive species and wander all over the place underground. I guess I saw that on a video somewhere. Seemed like a good idea for...

What I did for beer today

Visited Burley Oak Brewery in Ocean City and Dogfish Head in Milton, Delaware. Both in one day. Fun day. Great beer at Burly Oak and the brewer is very cool. He came out from the brewery at one point and once we started talking, he ran in back and came out with a coffee infused cream ale that...

New Hop Garden 2014 (pic heavy)

Got a message from Farmhouse Brewing Supply yesterday that my rhizomes have shipped. Expected to arrive tomorrow. Perfect timing! Very psyched.

What I did for beer today

Ran my climbing lines for the hops beds. All prepped now I'm gonna be anxious for the rhizomes to arrive...every day...

New Hop Garden 2014 (pic heavy)

Finished running the climber lines today with the help of my two boys. That roofline is 25 feet above the garden so no way I had a ladder that high. Had to get up on the roof with drill, caulking gun, coir bundles and screw eyes to rig them. Rigged a big old line I had around as a safety line...

pH meter drift measuring H2O but not wort

Thanks, Martin & AJ. I'll try those things and post back results.

What's your least favorite micro brewery?

I almost hate posting to this thread, because I wish all good things for people who have the guts to start their own brewery, and I want to give them the benefit of any doubts, but since this place has closed, and their crimes were egregious, I will name names.... The Guvnor Brewpub in South...

pH meter drift measuring H2O but not wort

I recently replaced the probe on my Hanna pHep 5. This fixed some strange readings I was getting during calibration and measurement. Now I see a different problem: When I measure the pH of my tap water, which I do while setting up for every brew, or my sparge water to check on the...

    Washington Turnkey 1/2 bbl brewery

Beautiful system and a steal at that price. Lucky guy/gal who buys that! If I wasn't all set up I'm be PM'ing you!

New Hop Garden 2014 (pic heavy)

Okay - loving this thread as a first time hops grower on Southern Connecticut. Cross posted this in another hops growing thread but wasn't able to upload the whole build thread of photos (apparently a limitation of the new mobile version of this forum). Anyway - I decided to copy the 2x2 by...

    Big Dark Malt PH Issue

I knew someone with sharp eyes would catch this ;) The mash water is at a rate of 1.25qts per pound of grain, so I don't see a problem there. Let me know if you do. The 12 gallons of sparge water is simply an artifact of my brewing system. I do continuous/fly sparging. In my HERMS system I...

    Big Dark Malt PH Issue

I'm glad that worked out for you. It will be interesting to see how close your prediction hits. Are you using a good pH meter? As for your thanks, I do appreciate it. I consider this just paying it forward like Matt Crispen did with me. So you're it :) I'm in Connecticut, so probably not a...

    2016 Hop Growing Thread

Southern Connecticut. Got a nice day yesterday and I was off, so I decided to prep. SWMBO was awesome and suggested we move some roses and a hydrangea to make room. I made a couple of boxes like some other postings here and sunk them. That was a lotta freakin work. The boxes are 24x24 and 12"...
