What I did for beer today

Finally kegging the Rumble - a Pliny clone. Fermented down to 1.010 - 9.1% - yeesh!. I'll put up two cornies and maybe a few bonus bottles. Can't wait for this - it's gotten to be an annual favorite. I'll be burst carbing one keg for a big event next weekend.

Funny things you've overheard about beer

Waitress at a restaurant in Newport Rhode Island over the Thanksgiving break - trying to explain an item on the draft list - "Oh, that's a double IPA, it's, like, totally, like really hoppy" while simultaneously and probably unconsciously turning up her nose. Me: okay, great - I'll have that...

What's your beer line up for turkey day??

It's a crime that with six nice homebrews on tap, we'll be away for turkey day. I'm gonna miss my kegerator, but I'll bring a few of my American IPAs (light and flowery, like 2Hearted), and a few of the Dark of Winter Imperial Stout for evening sipping.

    Official Broken Hydrometer Count

Don't give in to the dark side! those things are ten times more delicate than the regular hydros. I've been using my regular one since I bought it three years ago. I generally consider myself to be quite dexterous and exceedingly careful. I virtually broke that thing by looking at it, FFS...

    Official Broken Hydrometer Count

Brand new finishing gravity hydro - bought because I was thinking "I am the sh*t, man, gonna get myself a special hydro just for finishing gravities!". Carefully extracted out of the shipping tube in anticipation of first use. Have you ever seen how freakin thin those things are at the top...

Does Purging C02 release Aromatic from Dryhopped IPA's

It's an interesting question - never occurred to me before. I don't know if aroma is "lost" per se, but I think we're likely talking about very small measures. Probably too small to do any kind of legit test, if you wanted to get a real answer to the question. Scientifically, if I were to...

    NB Brickwarmer Holiday Red Ale

Interesting - you added the Orange Zest in primary? Or did you add that in the boil and it just came tumbling out?

What I did for beer today

Up early today. Added stage two dry hops to a Pliny clone. Tested SG. Stable at 010. Man that's a dry beer - and bitterness is really high. Guess that will mellow a bit. Tested SG on the Christmas Card beer. Day 11. 014. Taster was delicious and crisp with hints of the orange zest. That'll...

What I did for beer today

"Monitored" fermentation activity of the Christmas Card beer. Reviewed dry hopping schedule for the Pliny clone. Researched recipe for a Burton Baton clone. Resolved to purchase Steele's IPA book that is supposed to have one in it. Discovered I already own it. Opened a stock BB and remembered...

    Starter didn't start...

I make starters from Wyeast liquid smack paks religiously. In all of about 35 starters I've made, had exactly one dud. It was so obviously in contrast to all the others, there was no question. The pack was not particularly outdated or anything, it was just a dud. I tossed it and started over...

How to make sure priming sugars are spread evenly in my fermented wort before bottlin

I've had uneven results when I didn't stir so now I rack on top of the priming solution, then I gently but thoroughly stir with a big long large spoon. Also, the spoon is sizable.

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Hmm, missed opportunity: the Pliny recipe has terrified wheat in it but doesn't include a protein rest. Side thought: what has that wheat got be be all terrified about? Is it a Halloween thing?

    Dry Hopping technique - Chronical

So on Friday night (day three) I took another look and the leaf hops really hadn't fallen (pic 1). So, per passedpawn, I gave it a very gentle stir and got them all wet (pic 2). replaced the top, and then laid down a CO2 blanket before I put the airlock back on.

    Dry Hopping technique - Chronical

yeah - that's my take on it too - that's why I lay down a CO2 blanket after I put the top back on. About 20 secs of CO2 through the lid opening. I am babying this brew.
