    1 lb. of yeast?

The cheapskate in me is very pissed that two pounds of bread yeast is like $12 on Amazon, but 1lb of brewers yeast is >$70! K

Did Northern Brewer Purchase Austin Homebrew AND/OR Adventures in Brewing?

AIH is my local store, and I've been shopping from them since they opened their first location in Dearborn. Bummed that its under new ownership, but as a business owner, it should be your goal to make the business desirable to be purchased, and to sell and retire. Good on Jay for being able to...

First foray into distillation...don't think it went well

Good questions!! Potentially. I've only done one "brandy" and that was with finished wine that I had laying around. One other mead went through the still as well, but that was also a well finished wine, so no particulates. I don't have any experience for this one, sorry! Temperature is...

First foray into distillation...don't think it went well

No clue, as I've never gotten a BBQ flavor. However, I don't think you ran to "hot", as the liquid will boil at whatever temp that it is going to boil at. When I strip, I run at over 3/4 power from my 5500W element. The temperature changes as the volatiles and alcohols boil off. More power...

    Pear Brandy

Impressive amounts of little jars in that picture! I love how the table colors it. Keep reading until your eyes bleed, and running. Everything I've made has turned out drinkable, but its definitely getting better. My first, all molly rum is amazing, and its only 2 months old. Its time to...

Wine kit gone wrong. Can I distill? Make brandy?

Might be good to run, and then blend w/ the finished wine to fortify a few bottles! K

    Corn help

Yes, you can use that corn as its no different than chicken feed corn you buy at Tractor Supply. Or you can go to the farmers co-op and get the same for probably cheaper. Regardless, it will need to be gelatinized after milling. The best method I've found is to insulate a vessel, and add...

    Good book for beginners?

Homedistiller.org, and read until your eyes bleed. George has some good videos, but some say that he gives some poor information. I'm not a big video watcher, so can't say. I do like Jesse's videos from Chasing the Craft, and watch more of those than anything else distilling related. K

    Basement Bar and Brewery

Great build!! I was going to suggest vinyl plank flooring, and a transition to the wood. The flooring I got from Lowes and installed at my lake condo went in easy, and the way it seals its waterproof. They make transition pieces that would make it look pretty seamless at the door. I assume...

    How remove manufacturer’s label ?

No doubt its nasty stuff, just like the MEK (Methyl Ethyl Ketone) which is sometimes in carb cleaner. Use ventilation, and don't think that your latex gloves will protect your hands!! Its readily absorbed through your skin, so just don't get any on you! These chemicals are a last resort.

Kveik sugar head stalling at 1.06 gravity

Don't just arbitrarily add more stuff to your wash. Get some strips, and measure the PH. It may not be your issue.

    how to cut brandy?

I'll also assume you're "stripping" or running fast with a very inefficient pot still and collecting at ~95 proof, or less than 50% ABV. As a data point for you, I strip fast and hard, and collect enough from 2 or 3 strips for a spirit run. The spirit run I get the flow so that its dripping...

Kveik sugar head stalling at 1.06 gravity

Sounds like you had a little success in the past, and recent batches have caused issues? I've never used kviek yeast, but DADY and bread yeast will eat through a 1.078 sugar wash easily. My bet is that you've had a ph crash, and I'm surprised no one has mentioned it. Have you checked your PH...

    How remove manufacturer’s label ?

If all of the chemical methods above don't work, I'd try brake and/or carb cleaner. If that doesn't work get some MEK. That's got to be some of the nastiest **** I've ever worked with. If using MEK, do it outside and follow all safety precautions.

    Old Rum Barrel in Basement

If I was closer, I'd come get it and try to revive it. Wonder what shipping to 48170 would be? I happen to be fermenting some molasses right now! K

I can not find any information on making Whiskey. I need to freeze distil it. As I have limited funds.

Awesome rig. It definitely gives me some ideas! Glad to hear you're not putting 12 gal through that! I didn't figure so, but had to ask. K
