How many gallons of EdWort's Apfelwein have been made?

Just bottled 5 more gallons, plus 2.5 last month 20866.5 + 7.5 = 20874 and I have a question (even though I suspect the answer). What would be the effect of letting my apfelwein bottle carb in my bedroom closet for a few weeks, then moving out to the garage to forget about it for a long...

    Sour Beer Question

Last spring my friend and her brother came up to visit and he was on a sour kick. It was the first time I'd really tasted any sours, and the one that knocked me off my barstool was the Lagunitas gueuze. It was like champagne, but beer. I can't wait until I see that on tap somewhere again.

Mr Stupid goes to the Brew Store.......

The OP sounds like me on any given day. I wish it was because I was being continually distracted by hotties. A person who lived at my address before me continued to get Cosmo magazine delivered here, and I flipped through it a few times. One article was about the best new places to meet...

    Insect/spider life in my hops

I just picked my first year Cascades and am planning to wet-hop the beer that is mashing as I type this. Thing is, as I was picking through the hops I found a couple little gray spiders, several ants, and a small ladybug, and I doubt I even found everyone who's hiding in there. I'm planning...

    Left over mash grain

For those of you who make bread or cookies from spent grains, do the husks mellow out? I like to munch on the grains after mashing, but I always have to spit out the husks. To answer the OP, I'm composting them all right now. Heap is currently a litte overwhelmed.

    MoreBeer.com

Yup, I love MoreBeer too. Not my closest LHBS, but definitely my favorite.

    About to bottle....

What were the starting and final gravities? My guess is that carbonation will do wonders for this beer. I recently had the same experience. I bottled a beer that seemed really thick, but now that it's carbonated and aged a little it's great.

    170lbs of grain

Also, a bin made for 50 lbs of dog food will hold much more than 50 lbs of grain, because kibble is bulkier. I bought a dog food bin recently and emptied a 50 lb sack into it, and I probably could have gotten 70 lbs of grain in there.

How do you identify your homebrews?

Exactly what we do here! Or the sad tone of saying "No more 11 left." I was doing sharpie on the cap, but just started writing the batch number on colored sticky dots. The color makes it easier to distinguish all the different six packs in the recesses of the bedroom closet.

    I had to laugh.........

Wow, what a refined palate on a *********gy ingrate! I just watch "Beer Wars" the other night, and this reminds me of the blind-tasting part.

    I haven't had a bud light since....

Late 2000, couchsurfing at the house of a friend of a friend in Kauai. I would cruise down the hill on his one-speed clunker bike and ride back up with a 12er of Bud Lite under my arm. It was the house beer and I was the houseguest.

i just plain don't believe this

According to their graphs, the only time wine exceeded beer in the last ten years was in '05, which, coincidentally, is right after the movie Sideways was released. I remember going wine tasting some time after that, and the pour-person told us that their sales of merlot had dropped around 30%...

    Stupidest Mistake yet

You can also tell by touch. Oxiclean would have been very slippery, while Starsan feels astringent. Either way, you should be fine. On a distantly related note, my husband once drank several sips of Oxiclean before saying, "This water tastes kind of funny."

    The Police? Really???

I do think you should contact the paper that originally published the article about you (and maybe a few others). That way you can control the spin. Frame it as a reminder to the homebrewing community to make reasonably sure you know that your keggles were obtained properly. The added bonus...

Rubbermaid mash tun smells kind of sour

Thanks everyone. And thanks to everyone on HBT who turned me on to the wonders of Oxiclean! It's amazing stuff.

Rubbermaid mash tun smells kind of sour

I just took the lid off my Rubbermaid mash tun and it smells. It always keeps a bit of a grain smell from batch to batch, but now that smell has turned a bit sour. Every time I use it I clean it out immediately afterward. I hose it down (with cold water) and use the soft side of a sponge to...

    Small Batch Brewing

Lucky you on the carboy score! Nice to have friends picking up useful stuff for you. Doing 2 or 2.5 gallons in a 5 gallon carboy would work fine, the CO2 produced by fermentation will drive off the oxygen. For a 1-gallon batch, I'd go with a container that has a narrower footprint, simply...

Where to get bulk grain in Southern California?

MoreBeer? Riverside's kind of a haul from Glendale, but if you're getting a few sacks it might be worth it.
