Immersion chiller advice. Or, length vs. width...

Nope, not sure at all, just a wild guess. But I also try to be conscious of water use, and I imagined that if you slow the pump just enough that your output is tepid, than you're getting the maximum cooling for the water you use. However, you did say that you are recirculating. I'm...

Immersion chiller advice. Or, length vs. width...

Turkeyjerky, how many gallons were you trying to chill? Anyway, thanks everyone for the input. I've been getting envious reading the posts from just a couple years ago where people were buying their copper for just 10 or 15 bucks. The price sure has gone up!

    Mice ate my Beer!

Small consolation, but the hops might have killed them.

Immersion chiller advice. Or, length vs. width...

I just went to Home Depot to check out their prices on copper coils for the IC I want to make. They had a 20' length of 3/8 OD for $25, and then they had a 50' length of 1/4 OD on sale for $31, marked down from $42. I'm trying to decide which one to use. Also, if I go for the narrower and...

    Critique my Pranqster clone(ish) recipe

OP, did you ever go through with this experiment? How did it come out? I'm growing some Pranqster yeast right now and looking for a recipe.

    Buddy allergic to brewer's yeast!!

This is really interesting to me, because my husband sometimes gets a weird allergic-looking reaction to random beers at random times. We thought the same thing, maybe a specific type of malt or variety of hop. And now my first batch of Apfelwein is a month in, so I'll be sure to remember...

    Cat and Beer....

Boiling water is hot enough, but yes, you need the fat. Alcohol? Maybe an organic chemist can chime in on this theoretical question, but my guess is that a 6% by volume solution of alcohol would not incorporate nearly as much THC as would a pure lipid. VirginiaWolf, I LOVE the cat pic!

Rationalizing the costs of brewing equipment

Ha, so true! Actually, that is why I tried to come up with a better title for this post than "Rationalizing..". Because to me it's more like applying the same rules to similar situations. Is that another rationalization? :cross:

Rationalizing the costs of brewing equipment

Last night while going over my brewing expenses, I proudly declared, "That last batch was only $15! Of course, that doesn't include any of the brewing equipme..." And I swallowed that last sentence. When I make a meal, I don't figure the cost of the equipment into the meal. Example: "That...

    Warning signs of homebrew addiction

    Cat and Beer....

Now you'll have hair o' the cat for your hangover cures! Malintent, btw, catnip is in the mint family (Lamiaceae), not the pot/hop family (Cannabaceae).

    Yeast Starter

ArcaneXor, 100 grams per liter is a 1:10 ratio. (100g:1000mL). 4oz is 112 grams (28g per oz) so DeafSmith's recipe is also approximately 1:10.

    Slanting yeast

Awesome tutorial, and thanks for the idea. Here are my slants. For those of you who don't have all the equipment ready to do this, I highly suggest you bribe someone who has access to a microbiology lab to do it for you. I did this at my workplace (on lunch, of course!:p) and it was a snap.

    Random Bottling Question

I was planning on doing the same thing! I have a few mexican coke bottles. Maybe you should try capping yours empty first, just to see if the fit is the same.

    Perfume, Beets, and Pan

One of the best books ever!! The bartender at my local pub recently told me that beet is a "secret" ingredient in Two Rivers pomegranate cider. They use it for color.

    Glass Versus Plastic fermenters

Make a 10 gallon batch, ferment half in glass and half in plastic, then do a blind tasting and report back on this thread!

    Stubborn deposits/stains on glass carboy

turtle, I tried taking some photos, but they don't come out well enough to be useful. The camera has trouble focusing on a layer of something translucent inside something clear! actually, now that I see it, it looks slightly like osagedr's avatar (the frowny glass)! I'm on vinegar now...
