    Straining Wort with painters strainer

a newbie question (and sorry to hijack the thread)... but do you strain when going from primary to secondary? or primary to bottle bucket...or from chilled wort to primary?

Why 6 gallons? Can I brew less?

I'd rather have to pour out 50 bottles of contaminated beer than drink 10 bottles of an awesome brew only to realize I only made 10 bottles worth!!! You'll be surprised how easy it is to get started and how hard it is to mess something up. My first post last month had a lot of worried...

    My first brew day

thanks for your replies TexasStu. Day 14- Man has it been a long night. I measured again when I came home from work and the hydrometer still read 1.012 so I figured I would go ahead an bottle. I sanitized all my equipment and laid everything out in the kitchen within easy reach of my bottling...

    My first brew day

Day 12- I couldn't resist. I took another measurement last night since I'm getting anxious to bottle (I know, I know...but I leave town at the end of this next week so I want to bottle before then). I got a reading of 1.012. So it hasn't dropped much since Day 9. I plan on taking measurements...

    My first brew day

-Day 9- alrighty, I went out tonight and bought a bottling wand, hydrometer and a turkey baster. I opened the primary for the first time tonight since I repitched it. The smell was overwhelming...in a good way! No krausen but it definitely had been there. After sanitizing everything I took my...

a little (Lot) confused (kit instructions)

my brewing knowledge has increased 10x in the past two weeks since I began. Everyone here has been helpful and that link they gave you on the first page helped me a ton too. You'll get the hang of it soon enough! Good luck! -b

    My first brew day

thanks for the advice...I'll wait a little longer then. I'll also try and get to the store this week so I can grab a hydrometer. I need to pick up a bottling wand anyway (and maybe another extract kit for my next batch). Plus I just found in the instructions where it listed the hydrometer...

    My first brew day

is there a chart or something that shows what a hydro should read for my beer? The instructions that came with my kit never said anything about a reading and just told me to give it 10-14 days (the LME instructions says 4-8 days). what if I racked to the bottling bucket at 10 days and used it...

ale fermenting ok below 65 degrees?

your fears are similar to what I had...although mine were justifiable since I knew I probably killed off my yeast by rehydrating with too hot of water. Take a look at my thread if it helps with your worries: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f39/my-first-brew-day-94790/ Mine is in the basement...

Bluegrass + Brew day = HAPPY

I hope it cools down in the next week or so and you all get a ton of snow in the area! 'Cause my girlfriend and I are headed to St. Mary's Glacier near Idaho Springs in a couple weeks. And we want lots of snow! Skiing, snowmobiling, hot tub, beautiful scenery, an open bottle of whiskey, and a...

    My first brew day

thanks for the advice. My plan was just to bottle at 10 days after I pitched...do you think I should wait longer? I figured since I don't have a secondary right now, I could get a basic beer recipe bottled and then try my first one in 2-3 weeks after that. That way hopefully I'll have a base to...

    My first brew day

I'm having a hard time keeping myself from going downstairs every couple hours to check on the airlock, lol I actually don't have a hydrometer since one didn't come with the kit. I'm sure once I get more into this hobby I'll go pick one up. But I think for my first brew, I'm just going to follow...
