    My first Irish Ale

This will be my third batch, and I did a little time researching last night to try and pick out ingredients. So far I've only had a couple kits that I worked with, but this time I wanted to try and pick out the ingredients myself. An Irish Ale I'm calling Foxhound. I used the help of BeerTools...

    steep?

steeping is just the act of soaking an item in a liquid in order to gradually remove components from it. In the case of your wort, you are steeping the grains to gradually add fresh malt character that might be missing from the extract. The crushed grains add sugars to the water as they soak. I...

    stupid hydrometer...

one day they will make them out of titanium! They then will be useless as measuring devices....but they'll withstand anything!!! bwahahaha

How to know if beer is infected?

before you bottle....taste it!!! Every time I take a hydro reading, I taste the leftover goodness. That's how I know my wort tasted like crap. Just don't get worried that that crap won't get better...because it does.

How to know if beer is infected?

I haven't messed up a batch yet...but from what I hear, mold and terrible terrible ass like taste are symptoms. Of course, these are tastes that you should only look for AFTER bottling and waiting the three weeks for carbonation. It's amazing how much the flavor of your brew can change over the...

    Bottle Label Removing

I for one store all my bottles in the basement...so light really isn't a problem for long periods at a time.

    Bottle Label Removing

yes. look at your grocery store too...I just pick up the off-brand, it works fine too. I'll oxi-clean all my bottles a few days in advance...to get all the gunk out and get the labels off. Then rinse them and place them in the sanitizing solution on bottling day or the day before. Then run them...

    Bottle Label Removing

some just are more adhesive than others I guess. I just cleaned a batch of various brands; Sam Adams, Konig Ludwig, Dos Equis, Corona and Smithwick's. Put about 60 in a large tub filled with warm water and oxyclean. Let it sit over night. The Sam Adam's fell off the easiest. I basically just...

    Competition Recipe Etiquette?

is there usually separate divisions for people using extract versus all grain? Or do they even care...just as long as the Stouts enter the Stout division, etc.? not that I'm anywhere near entering a competition...just sounds like it might be fun down the road

And Tomorrow I Bottle For the First Time

moder...what? I don't know that word :drunk: good luck with bottling! It's actually a pretty easy process. But like the poster said above, make sure you have everything on hand that will make it go smoothly...if you don't for your first time, no biggy. Watching the brew sent in the...

    Custom beer glasses

I've been looking around for companies that can customize your glasses for you. I specifically would like my brewery logo on it and most of the companies I saw only did etching with no color. Most of the ones that did do color had an order minimum of 72 or 144. I mean, I drink a lot...but not so...

FINALLY got my second batch going...

too bad the solution to a crying kid at 4am isn't just moving it out into the front hallway like I could do with the primary :p

FINALLY got my second batch going...

I had the primary in the basement for a few hours the first day when I decided it was too cold down there (57F)...so I moved it upstairs to my bedroom closet. The temp upstairs varies between 61-68 during the day. The weather has been rather nice the past few days so I'm sure the average temp is...

FINALLY got my second batch going...

My girlfriend and I brewed Friday night and by Monday after work I still didn't have any fermentation...and gravity was still at the OG measurement. My first batch refused to take off too until I repitched. I don't know what in the world I'm doing wrong because I'm doing the exact same procedure...

    Question about airlock activity

thanks for that Revvy...I'm sure it was one of your canned responses, but I haven't seen it yet ;) I was going to wait anyway and take a hydro reading in a day or two. Just being my second batch, and after screwing up pitching the yeast on my first batch, it got me wondering. thanks again. -b

    Question about airlock activity

As I'm sitting here waiting for my primary to show me some activity (which it still hasn't yet after 36 hours...but I'm being patient), I started thinking about what a lot of people recommend around here. Some say "don't worry, you may never even see any bubbling activity in the airlock. But...

A few questions about my second batch

A few questions about my second batch

Just brewed my second batch last night with the girlfriend (she was interested in learning). It was a bavarian wheat kit that I added coriander seeds to. We crushed them up as much as we could, but that was exhausting...I hope it didn't need to be too finely crushed. A pepper grinder or...

    First time using actual hops

side question....should I put the hops in the fridge with the yeast? I'm brewing tomorrow so I'm guessing they will be alright in the box...? Got the girlfriend coming over to be my assistant. She's interested in learning the process too!
