    Spent Grains

The chickens love it and it's high in protein as well.

Anheuser Busch and their deceptive marketing

I like all beer, except maybe my cornstalk ale, I still have a few bottles if anyone wants to try some. It's aging rather badly as well.

large volume loss? (and other general questions)

Well, you have a problem. However I am confused a tad, did you boil for 90 minutes after the boil started? In any case you know the answer, the length of time on the burners is why you lost the volume. However, you do not want to leave a lid on your pot due the formation of DMS...

    Lovibond unit

Dunno but it should be pretty simple, what's it look like? Do you have a picture to post?

Yeast fermented all sugars from beer (help?)

You can search "nonfermentable sugar" here and you will get alot of suggestions. Maybe Stevia or xylitol will work for you, I would suggest lactose but if your beer has some unintended yeast/bacterium in it lactose will only make it worst, plus it's not really that sweet and adds body...

    Medieval Ale- Discussion and Experiences

Congrats! Lets see the last recipe? Also your pics don't seem to be showing up, maybe it's the firewall here at work though. A thought I just had was malting all the grains together, thinking is that this would be more "medieval" as far as the process goes, not all the grains would be...

    2nd "all homemade" experiment: pseudo-Ebulum

That is always a problem here, however after you do the search, on the right side of the screen you will see this: "Can't find what you are looking for? Try malting or our Advanced Search." It sometimes helps tremendously.

    fermentation. unhopped extract

It has plenty of yeast still suspended, the bottles need to sit in room temperature for appx. 21 days before they are carbonated sufficiently. I don't understand your statement "I put 1 1/2 carbonisation drops in every 0.5 bottle" does this mean you put 3 carb drops in one bottle?

    Scottish Wee Heavy with WLP004

You will end up with a scottish of some sort or a scotch ale depending on the hops, gravity and fermentation, this is the yeast from Guinness and should work great with all that darker malt. If it is higher gravity you will want to "condition" it quite a while and you may want to ramp up to a...

I am excited about my 1st competition

So are you saying the mini-BOS is a second judging to determine 1st, 2nd and 3rd but they dont actually score the second round? I don't understand otherwise how a lower score could be first. I did get third place in the Belgian Specialty category with a 34. I haven't got any scoresheets back so...

New to brewing - need help!

Yes correct in all above, The system capability is designated by the smallest capacity receptacle in the system, i.e. if you had a 10barrel mash tun and only one 5barrel fermentor, it would be a 5barrel system, etc.

I am excited about my 1st competition

AmandaK, what is mini-BOS, I have a 3rd place in the Vail Big Beers competition that currently has a check in the mini-BOS column, what does this signify? Is it still in the running for something or is this pre BOS? Haven't gotten that far in the BJCP books or just missed it somewhere. Sorry...

New to brewing - need help!

Yes this is a 5 barrel system, however one could concieveable do back to back mashes of the same recipe for the 10 gallons fermentor, or all the fermentors for that matter. The different fermentors are typically for different style/recipes of beer to ferment at the same time, traditionally.

    fermentation. unhopped extract

? What hops did you put in it ? The beer is usually bottled when it is conditioned, wheat can be rushed a little, maybe a couple weeks.

    Winter Warmer light fermantation?

Your airlock appears to be missing something, namely the inverted cup and water or sanitizer. That being said, the only way to determine if your beer is done fermenting is with your hydrometer. Take a reading 3 days apart, if it doesn't move then you have reached final gravity...

Bock style beers...how did the German Monks do it?

I am into the same sort of self reliant brewing, here are my journeys so far, the juniper yeast below would be good for belgian beers (Dubbels, tripels, quads, strongs and the like) mine has no funk to it. Malting: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f51/happiness-home-malting-107409/ Yeast...

13 gallons of unintentionally wild Brown, can I use it?.

This placed third in the big beers festival in Vail (Belgian Specialty category (16E)), I'll post the scoresheets when I recieve them to conclude this thread, I can't wait to see the comments, I believe there has to be at least one certified judge at each table...

different yeast strains and the reduction of DMSO to DMS

Hmmm, I've never heard or seen this anywhere, it seems we have conflicting information regarding DMS . . . .researching . . . . . Edit, It seems we are both correct , kindof: http://beersmith.com/blog/2012/04/10/dimethyl-sulfides-dms-in-home-brewed-beer/ Brew on my friends:mug:
