    fermenting temp

Try to put the fermenter in some sort of tub and fill around it with cool water. It will help to conduct/convect heat out of the fermenter to quickly get the temperature down and evaporative cooling from the surface of the water will also help. If you don't have a tub, try wrapping the bucket...

    Seeking higher attenuation

I should also mention that I used ~5% sugar in both batches. Could you post your grain bill as well? A lot of crystal malt could also adversely affect your FG.

    Seeking higher attenuation

I recently brewed two DIPA's with OGs of 1.071 and 1.072 respectively and reused WLP007 yeast from previous batches. The first finished at 1.008 and the second should be there soon. I actually do a two rest mash, first at 145F for about 30 mins and then 155F until conversion is complete...

    Not reaching target final gravity

You may also want to account for altitude and ion content, depending on where you are and your water.

    Slow Lager Fermentation

So I ended up deciding on the aeration + energizer method, since it's a) easier, b) lower risk of contamination, and c) hopefully faster. Airlock activity seems to have picked up already, so in a few days I'll take another reading. I'm hoping to get down to about 1.024 before doing a d-rest...

    Not reaching target final gravity

Also, how long did you mash for? Even if you were at exactly 154F, too short a mash could leave you with a lot of unfermentables.

i might have just ruined my beer

Pitch some lactic bacteria and turn it into a sour beer before whatever contaminates take over?

    Airlock expolsion

Unless it smells obviously bad (and you'll know) or you see a pellicle forming, it is still good. I might not reuse the yeast, but it should still taste fine.

    Airlock expolsion

Most likely it is still good, especially if the fermentation was still overflowing when you put the airlock back on.

    Slow Lager Fermentation

I brewed a Munich Dunkel on 3/26 with an OG of 1.058 SG and am concerned about the fermentation. I originally pitched with a half gallon starter made with WLP830 German Lager Yeast and then used the drauflassen procedure from braukaiser.com to hopefully improve my yeast health, as I've had slow...

    Possible DIY spunding valve

So I'm looking to get/make a spunding valve before I do my next lager and I found this valve online. http://www.tractorsupply.com/air-compressor-accessories/air-compressor-valves/air-adjustment-valve-1-4-quot-mnpt-inlet-x-14-fnps-outlet-3300116 Looks like it could be used as a spunding...

Large Giveaway - Fermenter, Mash Paddles, Thermapen

Username: jar1087 I like the site, but it seems to be a little beer focused at the moment (I might be somewhat responsible for contributing to that).

Is there a Hop Doctor in the House?

I don't often water, only when we haven't had rain for at least 4 or 5 days. I haven't added anything to the soil, but did mulch around the hops this June to help keep weeds down.

Is there a Hop Doctor in the House?

I started them last spring in planters with organic MiracleGrow potting soil and in late spring transplanted them into the ground; pretty much standard northeastern US topsoil. I'm wondering why only one of the plants would get it and why it would appear to spread from one to the other. I...

Is there a Hop Doctor in the House?

I've fertilized I believe twice this year, maybe three times. Each time I use one tablespoon of MiracleGrow in about 1.5 gallons of water and split it between two plants.

    Sorry, image didn't attach.

Is there a Hop Doctor in the House?

Not to hijack this thread, but I am also in need of a diagnosis. I have two Cascade and two Centennial plants, all second year and the varieties are planted separately. One of my Cascade developed what is seen in the picture below pretty early on in the year and it's now gotten significantly...

    Purging slightly later than filling?.....

I have no evidence to back it up, but I think that the dissolved oxygen from all of the sloshing due to carrying, driving with, etc. the keg could still cause problems when you get back. Just to be careful, one of the portable charger things would probably be a good idea.

Beer backed up into Secondary Regulator

So, like an idiot, I did the same thing while fast force carbonating my beer (too eager to drink it). Anyway, I'm looking at my regulator now and I can't tell if any beer actually got into it. Is there an easy way to tell if the shut-off valve has a check valve?

    Using a wort chiller

Yeah, I'd scoop that up if I were you, that's really cheap. I think I paid $30 for tubing, plus the fittings. As far as performance goes, I imagine it will work great; after all, they're pretty simple devices and not much to screw up when making them.
