I'm not even sure where gets -40, but photoperiod would probably be an issue. I've never heard of people trying to grow hops in arctic regions, so I can't say if it can or can't work.

Hop bines die back every winter anyways. It's the roots you need to think about, and I've not heard of people losing hops to winter's cold (though it might be possible?)

It's probably a fair idea to start with some stocks that are adapted to your local growing conditions, including latitude and season length. And cultivars you appreciate.

I use a lot of 2 gallon pots. It's clearly not enough for mature plants, but you can still get them to flower in them. Space and cost being considerations, it's a lot more manageable in 2 gallon pots than larger. But yea they'll be rootbound pretty quickly in them.

Japanese quinces are available here in nurseries, as ornamentals. It is however illegal to import more of them. I made a sort of fruity irish red with them. It was good, but perhaps it wasn't an ideal style mix. I'll keep trying stuff.
