    Onion beer

Hmm, that's an interesting idea. I hadn't considered caramelizing the onions first. I do think oils are generally prejudiciable to a good brew, but I don't recall why, and if it would apply in such a case. I could cook them in malt extract as a sugar source, too. And while I don't use much...

    Onion beer

I've searched a bit, and I don't think the topic has been covered. There's some threads about hop-derived onion aroma, about pairing cheeses with onions, about lactofermenting onions... but not about onion beer/wine. Has anyone here done it? I wouldn't expect it to be really pleasant to drink...

    Session IPA

It'd be pointless to lengthily debate semantics, but to me, 4.5-5.5 ABV is just a regular beer. 3.8% and fairly dry makes the brew much less caloric, which is great when one's spouse tends to guilt about that (ethanol is a huge source of beer's calories, the other being residual sugars). I've...

    Session IPA

Well I converted that recipe to extract, with some pilsner LME and Crystal20, maybe a tad less IBU (closer to 20) and a tad more ABV (closer to 3.8%), but it was pretty good. Slightly thin, but really acceptable. I'd probably add just a hint of dextrin. In this version dry hopping was with...

    Session IPA

I'm looking for some tips elaborating a session IPA. Or Session APA, or EPA, or pale ale, or however one wants to call it (google-fu seems to suggest some controversies ;)). I've looked through google and the search engine here, but with mitigated results. For of all, to describe what I'm...

Blue Beer with butterfly pea flowers

    1) The book cited wasn't scientific 2) Scientific knowledge is rarely absolute, our understanding of phenomenons grows all the time. Each study adds a piece to the puzzle, but none reveal the big picture. 3) Science is about positive knowledge, not negative knowledge. You can "prove" that X...

    Growing hops from seed

In Fall I would expect to get a decent seed crop from Neomexicanus seedlings (2nd year).

    Nitrogen Levels / Seaweed

My 3:1:2 ratio is going fairly well indoors, but I think I'll be boosting that to 4:1:2. Nitrogen is the first element that starts to show deficiency symptoms when I spread fertilization too much.

    Hops and extreme cold.

Google says the record cold for Winnipeg is -45C. GOOD TRY. ;) But I'll assume you are talking with the windshield/humidex factor (if not exaggerating), which is irrelevant due to the hop rhizomes being underground. You also get a lot of snow I THINK? Snow helps insulate the ground. In any...

    Hops and extreme cold.

I'm not even sure where gets -40, but photoperiod would probably be an issue. I've never heard of people trying to grow hops in arctic regions, so I can't say if it can or can't work.

    Hops and extreme cold.

Hop bines die back every winter anyways. It's the roots you need to think about, and I've not heard of people losing hops to winter's cold (though it might be possible?)

    Growing hops from seed

It's probably a fair idea to start with some stocks that are adapted to your local growing conditions, including latitude and season length. And cultivars you appreciate.

    Help with Hop Planters

I use a lot of 2 gallon pots. It's clearly not enough for mature plants, but you can still get them to flower in them. Space and cost being considerations, it's a lot more manageable in 2 gallon pots than larger. But yea they'll be rootbound pretty quickly in them.

    Quince Wine

Japanese quinces are available here in nurseries, as ornamentals. It is however illegal to import more of them. I made a sort of fruity irish red with them. It was good, but perhaps it wasn't an ideal style mix. I'll keep trying stuff.

    Nitrogen Levels / Seaweed

Why the 18 tonne truck? Just go to the coop and buy a 50lb bag of whatever you need. I'm talking about fertilizer, here, not compost. A little goes a long way. If it's a garden and not a field, those bags will last you years, the drive doesn't seem a huge deal. Or otherwise have them ship it to...
  17. Apimyces

    Nitrogen Levels / Seaweed

Varies from place to place, but usually anyone can go to an ag coop to buy "the real deal", though that's often in quantities superior to what most gardeners want to buy. Manure can bring a lot of carbon that mineral fertilizers can't, and for the nutrients one can rarely get cheaper than the...

    Nitrogen Levels / Seaweed

I'm not a fan of organic liquid fertilizers. You are mostly paying for water.

    100% homegrown

I mean, to be fair, I don't do malting, so I'm relying on quick definitions of these terms I'm not overly familiar with. But winnowing sounds like just cleaning the malt from debris with wind? Because I'm familiar with cleaning seeds from debris with wind, and malt is essentially still a (dried...
