I did three 6kg mashes and put all the speciality grains in the last run. My efficiency was only about 35%, so I doubt I'll try this again. I'd rather just do a double mash and correct my pre boil gravity with DME if I want to brew a + 1.100 beer...

Just bottled my triple mashed Imperial Stout the other day. OG on this bad boy was 1.141 and the wlp090 got it down to 1.040. Had it sitting on 160 grams of Jack Daniel's wood smoking chips for two weeks just to get a bit of Bourbon caracter to it. I really have my hopes up on this one. All that...

Have you checked your gravity before you start sparging to see how your gravity changes throughout the sparge? I've noticed that when I mash with around 5 Kg and have my mash efficiency set on 78%, I'll hit my gravity with +/- 2 points without any rinsing. I'd rather throw in a couple hundred...

I gained 9 points in my previous brew with a 60 min boil. My pre boil gravity was 1.036 and OG 1.045. That's an increase of 20%, and with a 90 min boil I usually get around 28%. I have the 50l and the boiling temp set to 102 C.

That seems impossible. The only thing I can come up with is if you were to boil with the lid on, and not get any evaporation. But you wouldn't do that, would you?

Yesterday was the longest brew day so far (11h). Did three mashes 6,1kg each, the first with 26l water and ended up at 1.052 which dropped down to 1.047 after I sparged with 5 litres. The sack of base malt I got had a way too fine crush, and it caused me alot of headache in the last two...

Let's see how my brew day goes and if manage to hit my pre boil gravity 1.117. Cut down the malt bill a bit because my refractometer scale only goes to 1.120 and I would at least like to have an idea of what my SG is before boil. I'm now going to mash 18.3kg grain with the total water amount...

I had a little brain fart there. At first I was going to program the mash schedule as followed: Dough in at the preset 40C, first phase 64C / 60min, set the rest of the phases to zero, and then 78C mash out. My initial thought was to quit the program before mash out, replace the malt and start...

Yes that makes sense. Another question that came to my mind when doing a double mash with the BM, is how it reacts when you mash in the second round. The wort will be in the 60C range, and the preset for mash in is set at 40C?

Is there a reason why you would put the speciality malts in the second mash?

A question to all you who have done double mashes. What efficiency have you gotten out of the total grain bill, and what was your SG after the first mash VS your pre boil gravity? I'm about to brew an Imperial Stout this weekend by doing a triple mash. The first grain bill will hold 13lbs plus...

What gravity have you guys got with your double mashes, and has anyone tried to do a triple or a quadruple mash? I'm planing a humongous Imperial Stout (OG way over 1.100), all grain, no sugar or DME. Got one done with a 14-15% ABV by adding a wine yeast and feeding it with Dextrose and...

What evaporation rate do you guys use in your brewing software to calculate boil off with the 50l?

It was about 6.5 gallons. Started out with 7.9 gallons (30l) and had saved only 0.5 gallons (2 l) for sparging, since I wasn't sure there would be enough liquid to cover the heating coils. It seems you need about 8 gallons of water to start with, with a 16.5 - 22 lbs grain bill to keep the...

Finally got around to write a few words about how my first brew went with the modified malt pipe. Brewed the base for a huge Imperial Stout last Monday with a 20 lb malt bill and 8.5 gallons of brewing water. Did a 60 min mash at 152 F, a 15 min mash out at 172 F and a 90 min boil. My OG was...

If I'm ever gonna brew a 50l batch i'll just use short M12 bolts, nuts and maybe if needed O-rings to cover the holes.

    Speidel Braumeister (brewmaster)

Said and done! Got the malt pipe drilled at a friends CNC workshop, ten 12mm holes 12,5cm (5 inches) from the top, and also got a new distance sleeve. I'll be doing a test run monday or tuesday when I get a fermenter free. Really have my hopes up that I finally will be able to brew a high...

    Speidel Braumeister (brewmaster)

Yes, because the 20l malt pipe won't fit enough grain, and the large pipe is to high to get proper circulation with the amount of water needed for a high gravity 5 G batch. That's why I'm gonna drill holes 5 inches from the top of the malt pipe. That way I can fit around 8-9kg of malt and the...

    Speidel Braumeister (brewmaster)

Yes it's exactly what I'm going to do. Tought I'd cut a new distance sleeve - or whatever it's called - from a stainless steel pipe to a lenght so that the upper plate stays about half an inch below the holes. Used 10kg of malt for measuring so that there still will be some room left for the...

    Speidel Braumeister (brewmaster)

A change in plans. Got this idea from a fellow member on a finnish homebrew forum, that instead of cutting the malt pipe, i'm just gonna drill about ten half inch holes in the side of the pipe. That way I don't have to make new lifting bolts, and if I sometime in the future want to make a 50 l...
