Homebrewed Biere De Garde Recipe and Review

Happy Homebrew Wednesday! A group of us took a shot at making our own Biere de Garde, and here we have a recipe and review for Mike's take on it. This was my first shot at a beer on my mash and boil, without the pump. Things didn't go super well, and the beer finished .010 higher than expected...

Brewer's Friend Blog: Helles Bock or Maibock

Good article! A group of us are all brewing a maibock, I'm really looking forward to it. I'm a big fan of Dead Guy Ale and the other examples I've had.

Philly Sour - Peach Sour Recipe and Review YouTube Video

I had been meaning to try out Philly Sour for a good long while now, and finally was able to make a batch of beer with it. Not to spoil the video, but it really worked out pretty great. The Pellicle that it formed was alarming, I thought it must be infected, but it all turned out all right in...

    Advanced Yeast Starter Techniques

Thanks! I'm glad you liked it. John is really a great brewer, and it makes sense once you hear him talk. We did ramble on a bit, but I thought it was worth the time.

Podcast for Helping You Gain More Knowledge on Brewing

Howdy Garrett! I'm a fan of your podcast, and I've been trying to turn more people onto it. You really pass some great info! I'm a bit behind, but I loved the episode with Ashleigh from Bierstadt! Keep up the good work!

    BIAB Mash Out?

I still "mash out", at least when I can remember to do so. I just raise the temp to 168 and that's when I drain the bag. In reality, I forget about half the time, and I don't think it makes any difference.

How do you clean your bags?

Why wash them? It's pre-boil :) Just kidding of course, like many others, I rinse them off, inside and out, then hang them to dry. Once dry everything shakes off.

Thinking About a Keezer - Some Questions

Those regulators are pretty inexpensive, I've thought about it because it's not uncommon to have a belgian, a stout, and a standard ale on tap at any one time. If you have the same experience, then I say go for it. I do suggest checking out the nukatap though. :)

    Using Yeast Nutrient

See, there's all that science :) My water had 170ppm Alkalinity, lots of bicarbonates as well. I just ended up using RO, but it sounds like the alkalinity was really my issue.

    Using Yeast Nutrient

I agree with you on the adjustments being important and not so much of a rabbit hole, I can't quite wrap my head around the science, at least I haven't dedicated the time to do so, but I know that the water profiles really make a difference. Also, when my water PH was so high, all my beers were...

    Using Yeast Nutrient

I'm not water chemistry scientist, but I was in the same boat and went to RO water with the salts recommended by Beersmith for a profile, and then I adjusted my ph with lactic acid. I believe it's made my efficinecy go through the roof. I would expect that it would help fermentation out quite a...

Thinking About a Keezer - Some Questions

Looks like there's some good answers, I only wanted to add that: I'm in love with the Nukatap faucets. They don't have a lot of thermal mass because most of the inside is rubber or plastic, which reduces the foam on the first pour. Plus, as someone mentioned, the tip can unscrew and there's all...

    Using Yeast Nutrient

I don't know if you and / or your friend use temperature control, but if his is fermenting at a higher temperature, then that could make a difference too. As @RM-MN mentioned, it's only really needed in anything that doesn't have malted barley, so wines and meads for sure, I also use it ciders...
