    1-2-3 method??

It looks like I have a good mixture of answers here. I guess I'm just going to have to try it both ways to start learning how each method affects the beer. Thanks for the help guys.

    1-2-3 method??

I currently have a Belgian Wit in the secondary, which has been there for a week. It was in the primary for a week aslo. After seeing many advocates of the 1-2-3 method, I'm tempted to leave it in the secondary for another week. However, many threads seem to say that the purpose of leaving it...

Easy Partial Mash Brewing (with pics)

If this question has already been answered in this thread I apologize. I did a quick skim over the pages, but I didn't see it addressed. I'm a noob, and have only used extract so far. Anyway, is there an equation for how much grain you need for trying to hit a target OG? This is where your...

What do you do in summer to keep your fermenters cool?

Revvy, I'm curious about your swamp t-shirt method. You throw a t-shirt over the fermentor then place in a shallow container of water? The t-shirt absorbs the water, and a fan aimed at it evaporates the water off, thus cooling? Sounds like a great idea. Do I have it right?

    Dryhopping and sanitation

I underdtand dry hopping is a common practice in brewing, although I have not done it yet. If I use whole leaf hops or grow my own, how do I make sure that the hops that I put in with the secondary is not going to contaminate my beer in some way?

Burnt DME on bottom of starter beaker - Cleaning suggestions?

So I messed up and poured in my DME into my beaker/flask, filled with water, then put on the stove. I walked away for a few minutes, and now I have a nice ring of burnt crap on the bottom of my beaker. I'm trying oxyclean as I type this, but if that doesn't work, any suggestions?

Making a Wit, dried orange peel or fresh?

I'm making my first wit, and thought I might use fresh orange peel instead of the LHBS stuff. I cook a lot, and I'm always trying to use the best and freshest ingredients, but does the same apply here? Also, how do you get bitter orange peel as opposed to sweet orange peel? My guess would be...

Looking for a good Belgian Trippel/Quad recipe (extract)

You have two different Pale LME @ 60 mins in your recipe. Should the second addition be @ 15, or do all of the LME need to be added at 60 min?

Looking for a good Belgian Trippel/Quad recipe (extract)

Hey thanks! That sounds like a good basis for making a good beer. I've seen a lot of recipes that have coriander and grains of paradise in them. Do you use them? Any other tweeks for a great beer?

My Stirplate... Cheap and Easy Build...

When I wire the fan red wire to the inside terminal of the potentiometer, and the input hot wire from the power supply to one of the outside terminals, the fan never turns comptetely off. I can adjust the speed, but it never gets below a certain rpm. However, if I wire the negative power supply...

    Need DIY stir plate help

I built a stir plate recently using a cooling fan, cigar box, 25oh 3 watt potentiometer from radio shack, and 9 V DC power supply. Currently, no matter how far or close I place the magnets from the surface, it throws my stir bar (42 mm) at a fairly low to low-medium speed before I can get a...

Looking for a good Belgian Trippel/Quad recipe (extract)

I'm looking to find a great extract recipe for a Belgian Trippel/Quad. I've tried to find extract clones for Rochefort 10, St. Bernardus Abt. 12, and have came up with nothing. I'll even take a good clone recipe for Chimay Grand Reserve (Chimay Blue) I do not have the ability to brew all...

ATTENTION Brewers in Kansas City area...

The only grains that I use is steeping and possibly partial mash. Speaking for myself, Im more interested in buying extract and hops in bulk. However, if we get enough replies that are interested in both extract and grains, it should help all of us.

    Starter or no starter

Thanks for everyones input. I bought the supplies to make a stir plate today, and a flask(although I think I paid too much for the flask - $28 for a 2 L pyrex??) Oh well, I was impatient and I wanted it. The Mr. Malty calculator is a great tool. Thanks again for your help.

ATTENTION Brewers in Kansas City area...

I am also an extract brewer. I'm in the same shoes that you are Fat Guy, and I have seen lower costs buy buying my extracts and hops online. Costs go down even further when we can buy 50 lbs of extract, or hops by the pound. Keep in touch, or send me your email via private message. I hope to...

    Starter or no starter

I think that was the most helpful answer that I've gotten. Simply put in laymans terms. Can I quote that??

ATTENTION Brewers in Kansas City area...

I'm looking to find some home brewers in the Kansas City area that are interested in joining together to buy supplies in bulk. This would lower the cost of brewing significantly, and would be a chance to meet home brewers close to you, share ideas and recipes, etc. Let me know.

    Starter or no starter

Yooperbrew, Coastarine, I appreciate your criticism, well not actually because my last reply I was not talking to you. To all the people that answered my question with helpful advice, I thank you much. It's helped me greatly. I already know that many people advise making a starter. I was...
