    LME vs DME

+1 on the DME. You'll get lighter beers that way also. I don't know where you're getting your ingredients, but it shouldn't double your cost.

    Good Starter kit?

I just paid $65 for a five gallon carboy and plastic fermentor the other day at my LBHS. I know he's kinda expensive, but I would have been better off just buying the kit you're talking about. My first kit was well over $100 and was similar to yours. Where did you find that?

    My yeast froze in shipping..

Give it 24-48 hours, don't forget to shake/swirl it as often a possible, or if you have a stir plate it's even better.

Do you have a dry yeast that you like a lot?

Cold as in lager cold, or like 60 degree cold?

    Drinkmixer instead of stir plate

Sounds like you are on to something, but yeah, I'd be worried about sanitation. Although you could spin some sanitizer through it and it might work. It also looks pretty small, but if it is at least a liter, it should work ok. And yes, you would definately have to rig it up to a plug in DC...

blow off tube diameter needed quickly

Sanitizer water works just fine. Actually, I'm pretty sure plain water works too, but I always add sanitizer to the water. Vodka is used so that if it gets sucked back into the fermentor, it doesn't really matter much. I've never had the water get sucked back in, so I don't worry about it, but...

    Stir Plate not stirring

Definately looks like too small of magnets, especially if you have them mounted to the under side of the fan. Maybe too small of fan also. If you point the stir bar end at one magnet, it should attract. The same end of the stirbar should push away from the other magnet. It looks like you have...

The Most You Have Paid For One Beer?

Rochefort 10 runs about $7.50 for a 11.2 oz bottle. So price per ounce, that's the most I've paid, but dang worth it. Good thing I can make my own now.

    Yeast starter question.

If you have iTunes, download the podcast from Brew Strong: Yeast starter. After listening to that, you'll know just about everything you need to know about starters. Also, if you're interested in making a starter, its worth your time to also make a DIY stir plate. They are relatively cheap...

    Yeast starter question.

The Erlnemeyer flask can be used on the stove if it's a Pyrex or Bomex. Its the same glass used to make pots and pans. Just make sure you don't burn your DME on the bottom of it!

Do you have a dry yeast that you like a lot?

I've looked at the S-33, but have never tried it. The descriptions online that I have found says that it's good for higher gravity and belgian style beers. Many belgian beers rely heavily in the yeast to influence the flavor, does this yeast produce those flavors as well as liquid?

Do you have a dry yeast that you like a lot?

I'm a noob, and I'm interested in hearing from those that have used dry yeasts with great results. Any suggestions?

    take off labels

Hard plastic labels? You mean the ones that have a plastic layer over the paper? A few hour soak in Oxyclean will take off 95% of the labels out there without any scrubbing.

I think my beer needs CPR HELP!!!

I just used Beersmith to figure your OG with the ingredients you used. It's actually closer than I thought. If a cup of corn sugar is close to a pound, then you would have on OG of around 1.070. So you may have taken your reading correctly. I can't say that your beer will be very good though...

I think my beer needs CPR HELP!!!

First of all, where in hell are you that it's hot??? Wish I was there! Secondly, you must not be taking your hydrometer readings correctly because there is no way you would get 1.070 with the ingredients that you mentioned. Take another reading, spinning the hydromter as you place it into the...
