    re-starting an old starter

About 3 weeks ago I made a nice starter from a slap pack of 3787 and put a little extra in the fridge (culture tubes filled to the top ~15ml each). I tried to get it going again and did not get any activity even after a couple of days. Can anyone explain why this could have happened? I know I...

How does the grain bill effect IBU?

dzlater thank you for the reference. Looks like I will have a little reading for the weekend. Epimetheus thank you for the explanation. I don't expect I will be doing separate boils anytime to save hops but is nice to have a reason to believe the calculator.

How does the grain bill effect IBU?

Just noticed that changing the grain bill changes the IBU of a beer even with the same hops. Also, it seems to have the opposite relationship I would have expected - making a beer bigger brings the IBUs down. Can anyone explain why this is the case? Thanks!

    Reverse recipe lookup?

Thanks Homercidal. I was just going to do a little mixing and matching as you have recommended. I will feel much better about it now with your blessing.

    Reverse recipe lookup?

Is there anywhere I can use ingredients to search for recipes? I know this exists for cooking. I'd like to use up some aging hops and also not make another trip to the LHBS. Thanks

    Boil Kettle Economy or Heavy?

peterj, I can't really find any problems with aluminium, it just feels so wrong to put stainless steel ball valves into it...

    Boil Kettle Economy or Heavy?

NewJersey, thank you for your response. I had not thought about the creepy sounds you can get - especially I expect when having such a wide pot on my stove top with its small burners. What do you mean the thin one will %110 bother? I suppose really cheap pots may be so low grade that you get...

    Boil Kettle Economy or Heavy?

I am going to get a 10Gallon stainless steel HLT/boil Kettle (I have a keggle for bigger batches). It seems there are 2 main parameters when considering the pots available. 1) Weight. Thickness of the walls and build of the bottom. I was ready to spend the money but after doing to reading and...

Canadians - boil kettle/htl deal needed

philjohnwilliams, thanks for the reply. I don't mind doing the conversion at all. The problem is that having a good website does not appear to be important to those stores - it is hard to tell what they will actually have in store. I am trying to avoid doing a major milk run. kurtwil, that...

Canadians - boil kettle/htl deal needed

My fellow Canadians, I am looking for a new 10 or 15 Gallon SS kettle for a hlt and occasional boil kettle. I'd prefer to pick it up my self as I do enjoy instant gratification - although ordering online is not out of the question. I am in a biggish city. I am aware of Hopdawgs and am...

    yeast strain comparison

Post brewing update. Just about to pitch, few more degrees of chilling... Biggest grain bill for me so far, happy that it all fit in my mashtun. Mash temp = 65c I don't have enough notches on my measuring stick for my keggle but it was over 10 gallons pre-boil. OG = 1.057 Split into...

    yeast strain comparison

Hi All, thanks for your responses. Thought I could post an update. Tomorrow I will be doing this 9 Gallon batch which should be somewhere between a ESB and a belgian pale - to match they yeasts I have selected. 18# 2-row 2# Crystal 40L 1# Biscuit 1/5# Aromatic malt 30 IBU with...

    yeast strain comparison

Thanks for the recommendations. Based on the descriptions both these pairs would be pretty different. This brew plan is in early stages but I could imagine the grain bill looking something simple like: 90% 2-row 6% munich 4% crystal 20L But I would certainly welcome recipes that would lend...

    yeast strain comparison

Can anyone recommend 2 ale yeasts for a little experiment I would like to do? As a skeptic of all things I have yet to be convinced of the impact that a yeast strain can have on a beer. So my plan is to make an 8 gallon batch of a simple ale and split it into two primaries and then pitch 2...
