    Ingredient jazz

About to do my second BIAB, took a look at a few ingredients I have and does anybody have a recommendation for grain weights to use for a 6 gallon batch (9G Turkey fryer) of something tasty: ~20lbs two row 2.2 lbs chocolate malt 4oz Munich malt 4oz Vienna malt 5oz dark crystal malt 1oz...

    Interesting gravity

The beer has been sitting in the secondary for a week now. After doing some calculations I expect ~5% ABV. I'd like to jack this up further, is it possible to add some sugar to the carboy - say enough to goose it to 6 or 7%? Or is it too late now

    Interesting gravity

Great to hear thanks guys for the quick responses! Not having the usual guidelines and also making many past beers that ended above 1.02 had me worried. What is the most sugar or DME I could safely add at bottling?

    Interesting gravity

P.s. we've now racked to secondary too. I'm thinking we should have left in primary

    Interesting gravity

I'm somewhat new to brewing, maybe have done 10 wort kits and one grain/extract kit. This latest kit was a full 23 litre wort (from Paddock Wood brewery in Saskatchewan) of toucan stout. You only have to add yeast and there are no instructions other than OG should be 1.05 - 1.055. The gravity...

Lag time between mash and yeast

wow thanks for the super fast response. Great news, I had hoped as much and good recommendations - would love to explain a mess of beer like that in my vehicle to a cop.

Lag time between mash and yeast

Doing my first all grain batch soon... It's a balmy -40 here in Edmonton so need a place to cook this inside (BIAB with turkey fryer). Can't do it at home so will brew at the shop (trades shop). I'll ferment at home of course. My question is; is it ok for me to do all primary steps of brewing...

Is this to much grain? GIB winter ale CLONE(hopfully)

Also, here is a further description of the beer from the brewers website: "Caramel malt aromas dominated by cocoa and vanilla. Complex layers of vanilla, bready malts, toffee, cocoa bean and a slight nuttiness. Moderate hop bitterness gives balance so that sweeter flavours do not overwhelm."...

Is this to much grain? GIB winter ale CLONE(hopfully)

I'm also wanting to brew a clone of this beer and Dex323's recipe is the only one I can find. A few questions regarding solbe's comments, as this will be my first ever all-grain batch. It will be BIAB style. What would you recommend changing about this recipe considering I would like to do...

Help me with finaly making a Granville Island winter ale Clone , any help is good.

I'm so happy to see this thread :mug: Starting my first all grain brew, going to BIAB, and Granville's winter ale is the style I want. How did the brew go? Would you make any changes to the recipe? Gravity readings? How's it look now? I'm going to do something similar in the next week

To Secondary or Not? John Palmer and Jamil Zainasheff Weigh In

haha yes it was sanitized in boiling water before adding. should have clarified and thanks for checking. I also was not clear on the temperature, I stated the temperature of the fermenting bucket 3 days in, not the basement. My bad. Looking forward to seeing what the difference of skipping...

To Secondary or Not? John Palmer and Jamil Zainasheff Weigh In

Wow thanks Homercidal for the quick and detailed response! I usually don't have blowoff problems, but for the first time added a few cups of malt extract in the primary to juice the finished product alc % - I'm guessing this may be why. the temp in the basement sits between 66-69. Great...

To Secondary or Not? John Palmer and Jamil Zainasheff Weigh In

Hey folks, I've read through most of this thread and haven't seen an answer to my question. I'd like , but I'm concerned about sanitation. In my secondary carboy, I have an airlock and do not fear the beer getting infected. But my primary is just a large bucket with a lid... should I put this...

    My New Brew Do?

Good questions, more information will help: Yes, correct. 23L extract kits. Have also done a Pilsner and Amber Ale. Have typically enjoyed beers like Pilsners but am moving more towards the other extreme - dark rich goodness. Just settling into the brewing process, its different with each...
