    Need help calculating abv

Since that is the 6.2L volume is after he put it into secondary wouldn't that skew the result? If that is the case you would need to figure out trub loss from the DME he added too. Starting gravity is the a measure of sugars in the initial volume. Fermenter loss is not taken into account (or...

    Freeze Distillation

Thanks for asking for the information and posting the response. That pretty much settles it. As was mentioned before, I doubt the ATF would waste time and money going after a home brewer doing this for personal use. Consider that pot is legal in 8 states and DC and they aren't going after any...

    Need help calculating abv

Did you take a gravity after you added the extract? I wonder if you could do some sort of blending formula average, based on the gravity of the initial amounts. I don't know if there is a plausible formula to use but bet there is probably one out there somewhere. You may try something like...

I have some RO water questions that have probably been answered before.....

I just ordered a 5 stage, reverse osmosis water system. I bought it from a company called Costway. They sell the same system through Amazon but it was cheaper to buy it direct. At $85.95 it is $10 cheaper than the Amazon price. They have two, essentially identical systems they are selling...

Lager: hazy when cold, clear when warm

I am having the same chill haze problem. I lager fermented 10 gallons using the Brulosophy quick lager method. In the end, I chilled it to about 36 degrees (as low as I could get my chamber). I brewed it November 4th and bottled/kegged on December 1st. I put gelatin in it while it was cold...

    Worm infestation in plastic equipment

That is all pretty nasty. I would probably trash it all. Vinyl hose is cheap and a new funnel only a couple bucks.

Is all silicone equal and food safe?

That is good to hear. I have coated the inside metal of my heating elements with RTV and it did smell like vinegar. I would rather have the silicon in my kettle than rust on the element. I do have an opinion, right or wrong and with little scientific basis that given there is so little...

Chocolate vs Coco Nibs vs Cacao Powder

I am toying with making a KBS clone. All the recipes on line use both chocolate and coco nibs. What is the difference? Is it just the oils in chocolate? I have made Chocolate Mint porters a couple times in the past and never seemed to notice a problem. I used 65% cacao chocolate chips and...

    Boil Kettle False Bottom, anyone??

Where is your pick-up tube? I doubt a false bottom would help much or at all unless it was a pretty fine mesh. A bazooka or other screen filter would probably clog. After whirlpooling, if you don't want any of it in the chiller you may need to raise your pickup tube and leave more behind.

Help with BIAB setup in apartment

Here is my $.02 First of all, welcome to the hobby. I hope that you find that it is something you like to do. I have been brewing for over 5 years and have progressed from a “Mr Beer” kit, to a turkey fryer and coolers to Keggles with bigger burners and larger coolers, to a 3...

Defrosted keg want to recarb any suggestions?

I had this same thing happen a few years back. I found it at 8:30 in the morning the day of a festival I was supposed to take a keg to at 12:30. I spent all morning defrosting it in a bathtub of warm water, then I put it outside for the last hour or so to cool down (it was 20 degrees outside)...

Should I pasteurize the juice before pitching yeast?

In the end I decided to pasteurize. I did not boil it. I raised the temp to 165F and let it sit there for about 25-30 minutes. I then chilled it with my immersion chiller, which I had sanitized in boiling water, then Starsan. I pitched the S-05 and it was fermenting within 8 hours. It has...

Should I pasteurize the juice before pitching yeast?

My beer club went to an orchard yesterday picked 40 bushels of apples and had them crushed by the orchard into cider. We got around 130 gallons. It was a great time sampling last years ciders and everyone's new beers. I have a question. Some of the people are going to just let their ciders...

About to dump 15gal of maple ale. Help!

You're missing the point. Use it as an opportunity for some experimenting. You never know what you will end up with. I have extra kegs.

Adding coffee to a stout in the secondary

After cold crashing and bottling half of the WPL004 portion I ended up "Dry Hopping" a little over 3 ounces of Tanzanian coffee in the rest. I left it in the fermentation fridge at about 36 degrees. The coffee I used, the roaster recommended and said it is one a local brewery uses. I left it...

About to dump 15gal of maple ale. Help!

I agree. Keg it, carboy it or put it in some buckets. Set it aside and check it in a few months. I had a batch of Irish Red that had Band-Aid real heavy. I left it for a year in an keg (I also added some charred oak slats). It isn't half bad now.

Adding coffee to a stout in the secondary

I have 10 gallons of an American Stout. I decided to split it into thirds and do some experimentation. I fermented about 3 1/2 gallons with Rogue Pacman yeast and the other 6.5 gallons with White WPL-004 Irish Ale. OG was 1.074. The Pacman portion finished at 1.020 (7.2% abv), the WPL-004...

    The Importance of Brewing Water

Excellent article. I have recently become serious about my brewing water chemistry and have read many articles. This is very to the point and succinct. I recently obtained the "Water" book as swag at a contest but haven't quite got around to reading it. This article does a great job of...

Setting Up A 50 Gallon Home Brewery In Portugal

Congratulations on your setup. That it very large for personal brewing, but it is a great way to make new friends in a new place. I am also curious how fast you can heat that much water with 3000 watt elements. Are there multiple ones in your kettles? You mentioned that your electrician...
