    starter vessels

I hadn't thought of that but it does pour less yeast out than my 1 gal tea jar that had too high of an arch in the bottom. It was a high wire act balancing the stirbar in it.

    Odd looking .....

AAAK! It's a RoboBrain from Fallout 3. Looks like the off-gassing CO2 from fermentation is holding the yeast up top. Should settle given a little more time.

    starter vessels

I picked up one of these 1 gal glass cracker jars at WM for $5. I looked at several and picked the one with the flattest bottom. It sits on my stirplate and doesn't throw the stirbar. Cover the top with foil.

    Modelo Especial Clone?

Probably the 6-row. My LHBS doesn't try too hard. http://www.thehomebrewery.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=THB&Product_Code=K03&Category_Code=UNCGRAIN

    Modelo Especial Clone?

It could be that I used Breiss domestic Vienna. It doesn't have as much flavor as continental malt. My clone, when tasted side-by-side with an Especial, is extremely close. I keep it on tap at all times b/c everyone loves it and it's always a good choice if you just want an easy drinking pint...

    pH Buffer Solution Capsules

I see quite a few threads about buffer solution on here. Just thought I'd share what works well for me. I initially bought big containers of pre-mixed buffer solution not knowing that it expired after a few months. What happens is the pH 7.0 solution grows mold. You can tell b/c its color...

How To Heat a Refrigerator (WTF?)

I've heated a garage fridge in the winter only using a Johnson controller. Not the most efficient way but it can be done. Leave the controller plugged in to the fridge and set to your desired temp. Find the smallest possible heat source that will raise the fridge temp to your desired level...

    Mangrove Jack's Lager yeast M84

Beersk, this yeast does have a distinctive flavor. Post-ferm, my young, cloudy beer tasted like pineapple. I believe anything fermented with it needs to be gelled. On the schwarzbier, did you check or adjust mash pH? My darker beers all had a "twang" to them before I bought a pH meter. I...

Measuring Water Additions (Scale only Does 1g)

Do you have a Harbor Freight Tools store nearby? I've used this scale for 6years and it is still calibrated perfectly---1 zinc penny weighs 2.5 grams. http://www.harborfreight.com/digital-pocket-scale-93543.html

    Acetylene regulator and C02 bottles

Acetylene regulators typically handle lower bottle pressures than CO2. If he decides to do this, he needs to find out if it can handle 1500psi of pressure. Acetylene bottles have less than 400psi in them. Just looked on Amazon at a couple and they say 0-300psi max. It'd probably kick the...

Funny things you've overheard about beer

It was taken out of context. Here's the complete sentence. "Post-fermentation dry hopping allows the 10% ABV monstrosity to gently coax the citrus rind and grapefruit aroma to join the 100 IBUs already present. "

    Sub 1.030 beers

When Hopville migrated to Brewtoad, it changed the recipes slightly. Some of my grain additions were 2ozs and it shows them as 1.92. I based the recipe on info from here: http://patto1ro.home.xs4all.nl/czecintr.htm As well as beer reviews on ratebeer for Polotmave since we can't get this style...

Harbor Freight Tools -- What works? and What doesn't?

I figured your scale was showing to be off with quarters b/c the quarters were diff weights. My scales are very close when I start adding multiple pennies. I always forget about nickels being dead on 5G. Thanks for the reminder Alien. Amazing that these cheapo scales are so accurate. Mine has...

Harbor Freight Tools -- What works? and What doesn't?

I wouldn't use that site's weights. They list all coins as weighing the same. Different year coins have different weights. Old (earlier than 1982) copper pennies weigh 3.1G while newer zinc ones weigh 2.5.
