Question about steeping grains and brew color

So my first two batches look quite darker than they should be. I wonder if while steeping the grain if I agitated the bag too much. Do y'all think this will be an issue for changing the taste of the finished product?

Time frame for racking to secondary?

The lack of slugde and sediment is the reason I want to use a secondary. Think I'll give it at least a week for it to settle out of suspension and have a seat at the bottom of the bucket

Time frame for racking to secondary?

Just wondering what the general concensus is on the subject. I've read a week after and also read once the bubbling stops you can transfer. I started a batch on thursday evening and haven't seen much action in the airlock all day today after it having a constant bubble every second or two...

OG is too high from loss of water in boil

I guess it's possible that I got more of the trub sediment than I should have in my sample. Guess i'll let it settle a bit and make sure to pull from the top next time. Thanks for the tips

OG is too high from loss of water in boil

Hydrometer is calibrated, just verified it (since i hadn't done that prior to putting it in the wort)

OG is too high from loss of water in boil

And to measure I pulled some wort out with a baster and put it in a test tube, read the measurement just below the meniscus (been in bio and chem lab enough to know my way around this step)

OG is too high from loss of water in boil

I would imagine that it's at most a pint or so short, probably less though. Guess I was just surpirsed by the high OG, I was expecting something lower. Should have been around 1.064. Was planning on tranferring to a secondary in few days but the fermentation seems to have slowed way down...

OG is too high from loss of water in boil

I finished brewing a 1 gallon recipe and I boiled off a bit more water than I expected to so the volume of my wort was a bit less than a gallon. The OG reading i took when put into the primary was 1.172. My question is when i tranfer the wort into a secondary in a couple days can I add a...

    Beginners problem with airlock

Out of curiosity, how do you know when you need a blow off tube or not? Is it certain types of yeast or does that knowledge just come with experience of watching the wort?

Is a 2gal bucket too much air space for a 1 gal recipe?

Thanks for the tips! My thought proccess was to use a 2 gal plastic bucket for the primary and rack to a 1 gal carboy after. I didn't think the carboy would be enough room just incase of some excited yeast.

Is a 2gal bucket too much air space for a 1 gal recipe?

Just curious for 1 gal recipies if a 2 gal bucket is too large for a primary fermenter? Seems like the less air space means less chance of getting unwanted bacteria into the wort. What are y'all thoughts?

    Temperature control in basement needed?

I've been reading that temperature control during the fermenting is huge in quality of the finished beer. My basement is most likely where I will store the fermenting beer, but I have to wonder if the temperature is too cool. My basement tends to stay around 67-68 degrees. It's been a while...

Recieved a 5 gal brewing kit as a gift and rookie to brewing....

As I am looking through recipes my wife walks by and gives me the look and says "can you make anything you want?" to which my response was "I can try like hell". I get a smile as she walks out and says "Well, you know what type of beer I like...." I think this could be the start of something...

Recieved a 5 gal brewing kit as a gift and rookie to brewing....

Thanks for the suggestions, part of it is that my wife and I (moreso my wife) don't drink that much beer. I like to have a variety of beer in my fridge so having 5 gal of something to drink would probably take me a while to get through. That being said the kit I have came with the supplies for...

Recieved a 5 gal brewing kit as a gift and rookie to brewing....

I've spent a good bit of time looking around online and doing reading where I can since this is something new to me. I have found some small batch (1 gal) recipies that look like more my style for now until I have a few runs under my belt. Currently the kit I recieved contains: 5 gal...
