    Robust Porter Recipe Help

I'm making a robust porter, but want to keep it around 5%. Here is my pre-base malt recipe: 1.75 lb. white wheat 1.75 lb. brown malt .5 lb. coffee malt .5 lb. extra dark crystal malt .5 lb chocolate wheat So... how much Maris Otter to get me around 5% ABV? Thanks!:bigmug:

    Glass or PET Carboy

I suggest you move quickly on that before someone else gets rich off your idea. Come to think of it, they've already been invented. They use them for colonoscopies. Prices for used ones on eBay are probably pretty good, and I bet hospitals can only use them one time.

    Glass or PET Carboy

Big Mouth Bubbler. Easy to clean. Light weight. The odds are pretty good that hauling a glass fermenter will only get harder as you get older (personal experience tells me). Loss of muscle mass is a fact of life.

How do you save your cooling water?

+1000 BIAB, no sparge, no chill is 50L of water for 23L of wort. I still have to wash the BK, but no-chill saves a TON (i.e. many, many gallons) of water.

Got free bottles to give away? Post 'em here!

I have 10-11 cases total. Mostly 12 oz. brown bottles, maybe 2-3 six-packs of green bottles, and about 20 or so bourbon county stout bottles. All, rinsed, but not de-labeled. Free to a good home.

Beer you like but have never brewed?

"There seems to be a fine line between an incredibly good complex sour and a terrible vinegar + diaper mess." I always wanted to make one of these, but have never found a good recipe. When, exactly, do you put the diaper in? Is it in the mash? More like a hop addition for "x" number of minutes...

OxyClean Free vs PBW for bottles

I normally use Oxyclean Free (to avoid the scented stuff) but have had trouble recently finding it in the west suburban Chicago area. Anybody have any similar issues?

Beers made at higher fermentation temperatures

I would offer some advice. But since you don't like porters, I'm afraid I can't do that;) Actually, I'll say +1 on Kveik yeast. Also, search "swamp-cooler", which also works fairly well. But the mini fridge or wine cooler (off Craigslist can be found for $45-$80) plus an Inkbird temp controller...

Beer you like but have never brewed?

Never brewed a sour. Don’t really want to wait a year to find out I made a mediocre (or worse) beer. May need to make an alt beer some day. Mmmm. Love Scottish ale; have one on the fermenter now. Never brewed a block, but really like them. Never brewed an IPA, but that’s because I’m not big on...

    Favorite/Worst Cheap Beer?

I remember Tudor. The fact that I didn't care for most lagers does NOT mean Tudor was not horrible. It was!

    Favorite/Worst Cheap Beer?

Anybody else notice the number of beers that are in one person's "worst cheap beer" list and in another's "best cheap beer" list? To each their own. :mug:

    Scottish ale -water adjustment help

I'm brewing a Scottish ale using RO water. I know VERY little about water adjustments (although I plan to address this deficit of mine). So right now I just need advice for this batch, and perhaps a resource recommendation for future learning (I know virtually nothing about chemistry, and no...

How do you Mash in w/BIAB?

Have you ever SEEN a banshee brewing? They are classic RDWHAHB followers, and religiously take their time when mashing in, stirring just enough to prevent doughballs, but not a bit more.

Show us your favorite bottle opener

From my grandparents liquor store in the 1950's. Combination bottle opener and drink stirrer. Reads: HILL'S LIQUORS open 8 A.M. to 11 P.M. St. Paul, Nebr. Ph. SK 4-4145 (who needs an area code in a town of 900?)

    Harry Potter Butterbeer

I suggest just using a magic wand from Ollivanders, and making a perfect butterbeer with a simple spell.

Wilser BIAB vs The Brew Bag?

Vs. 5-gallon paint strainer bags from Home Depot, about $5 for 3. They work fine and are just another option for BIAB. Obviously these are only good for 5-gallon batches, and are also limited in amount of grain they hold. I brew mostly ABV beers so it hasn't been an issue. Has held up to 12 lbs...
